General requirements for executions of welds

1. Scope and Application of Purpose


Scope of Application
This specification defines general requirments for production of weld seams of welding constructions. The
requirments according to this specification apllies to productions ites LWN, MCR and LSW, departments
cutting, steelwork and welding.

Purpose:
Assurance of application of design and normative requirements to welding constructions.

3. General requirements
3.1. Bevel preparation, material preparation
In general raw material and semi-finished products shall be shot blasted prior to cutting. For welding-related
processing all raw material shall be in shot blasted condition. (surface quality: ISO 8501 - Sa 2½). Welding
preparation shall be performed according to drawings. All cut edges performed by thermal cutting shall be
cleaned and deburred in order to be free from slag, scale, etc.

3.2. Quality level for imperfections


All weld seams shall be evaluated according to DIN EN ISO 5817- group B.

3.3. Welding supervisors


Execution of weld seams is to be carried out under supervision of welding supervisors according to DIN EN
ISO 14731.

3.4. welders / metal workers / fitters


For any kind of welding executions (weld seams, tack welds, temporary welds etc.) certified welders and
metalworkers are permitted with no exception. The range of qualification shall conform with the welding task,
depending on

- welding process
- welding position
- joint type
- base material, material dimension, product form

Independently on the welding task the basic qualification for internal permitted welders and metal workers
consists of the following qualifications:

4. Design requirements and Welding Procedure Specifications (WPS)


All information included in drawings and welding and inspection plans (WIP) according to parts lists provide all
necessary data necessary for execution of weld seams according to valid welding procedure specifications.
The relevant WPS are defined in the welding and inspection plan, consisting of

- Welding process
- Joint type and
- Material combination,

All valid WPS are stored in document archive LIDA (QW > Schweißen) and are to be made available for any
welder and steelworker by the welding supervisor. All necessary Information for execution of weld seams are
included in the respective WPS, especially:

- Applicable raw material


- Applicable welding consumables and auxiliary materials
- Applicable welding positions
- Welding parameters
- Minimum preheat temperatures and maximum interpass temperatures
- Requirements for back gouging of weld seams
- Post weld heat treatment

If any WPS required by the welding and inspection plan does not exist in the document archive the welding
engineer shall be informed immediately before welding is carried out.

4.1. Welding processes


Following welding processes according to EN ISO 4063 are approved for manufacturing:

- 135 – MAG (Gas Metal Arc Welding with solid wire)


- 141 – TIG (Tungsten Inert Gas Welding with solid filler)
- 12 – SAW (Submerged Arc Welding) applicable are processes 121, 123 and 125
- 783 – Drawn arc stud welding with ceramic ferrule or shielding gas

If root and filler/top of a weld seam are to be welded by different welding process the welding process for root
welding is specified additionally in brackets in the welding and inspection plan. Following combinations of
processes are possible:

- 135(141): Root TIG, Filler/Top MAG


- 12*(135): Root MAG, Filler/TOP SAW

4.2. Acceptable joint of types


According to joint types overview LH 10336465.

4.3. Approved material combinations


All weldable and approved materials are listed in the respective WPS.

4.4. WPS transformation list


Steelwork constructions with welding and inspection plans not designed according to the latest edition (Version
03) shall be carried out according to WPS transformation list LH 11931865.

4.5. Steelwork constructions without welding and inspection plans


For steelwork constructions without welding and inspection plans generally welding process 135 shall be used.
Relevant welding procedure specifications shall be defined according to parts lists.

4.6. Welding sequence plans


Additionally to the design requirements build-up sequences are stored in ProCoM. Where available the
respective build-up sequence is mandatory for production.

4.7. Weld seams in superior assemblies


For welding constructions without welding and inspection plans but including welding symbols on the drawing
(picture 2picture 2 welding constructions without welding and inspection plan but with welding symbols), the
relevant information for welding is mentioned in the welding and inspection plan of the superior welding
construction. The information is given on the header of the drawing.

4.8. Tangential joints between plates and shells/cylinders


For tangential joints additionally to the welding and inspection plan the necessary weld seam width is defined
in the drawing (picture 3).

4.9. Tack welding:


Requirements for tack welding acc. to LH 10558004.

4.10. Welding consumables


Required information concerning welding consumables to be used is defined in relevant welding procedure
specifications. Alternatively equivalent welding consumables may be used by welding supervisor if approved
according to LIKV workflow.

4.11. Temperature control


Any welder or steelworker shall be able to test preheat and interpass temperatures at any time with
temperature sticks. Following temperature sticks are to be used.

4.12. Marking
Any welding construction is to be identified and marked at any time during production. Until release of the
welding construction for painting it is to be ensured that any weld seam can be assigned to the respective
welder. NDT-welds shall be hard-stamped by the welders.

4.13. Post treatment of weld seams by grinding


Weld seams with category C1 shall be treated by notch-free grinding. Relevant information concerning grinding
direction, grinding radius etc. are determined in the drawing.

4.14. Non-destructive Testing

4.14.1. Scope of Testing


The scope for non-destructive testing of weld seams according to LH 10224956 are exclusively determined in
the welding and inspection plans. Any welding construction shall be tested 100% VT according to LH
10227842. For projects and orders requiring documentation of VT the welding and inspection plan shall be
signed by the relevant welding supervisor, see picture 4.

4.14.2. Waiting time for non-destructive testing


Execution of VT, UT and RT shall be carried out for steelwork constructions cooling down to ambient
temperature (20°C). For magnetic particle testing the waiting times according to Table 2 are to be maintained.

For defined minimum waiting times (24h, 48h) the effective waiting time shall be documented in the welding
and inspection plan. The required waiting time for NDT-Testing may be increased by the responsible welding
engineer in case of need.

4.15. Weld repairs

4.17. Splices on demand


In case of unavailable raw material size according to parts list the necessary size may be produced by welding
partial sections to the final size according to process 0000325968. Feasibility, location of splices on demand
as well as joint type, bevel preparation, grinding direction etc. are to be defined and approved by the
responsible welding engineer in cooperation with the relevant design department and production planning.
Splices on demand are considered on a case-by-case basis and are order-related. Splices on demand are
generally classified as category 1 according to LH 11912085

4.18. Alternative welding processes


Required welding processes to be used according to welding and inspection plans are generally mandatory.
On case-by-case basis alternative processes may be used for production provided that:

- The relevant WPS exists in the Liebherr document archive LIDA


- The use of the alternative process is approved by the responsible welding engineer
- Explicit traceability of the affected welding construction welded with a differing process as required by
the welding and inspection plan
