CONCEPT NOTES:

Taking a stand is to express one’s opinion and tell people that things need to change. It’s like joining in a debate
and sharing your arguments in a proper and formal way possible especially when critical issues are presented.

Now that there are many critical issues all over the world and they are being watched and spread online, it is
necessary for you to have the knowledge on the process of taking a stand on a particular issue. Before making
a stand once prompted with one especially from a social media, you must:

1. Examine the issue.

- More than anything else, study the issue carefully and this will tell you where you will need to do some pre-
work and damage control after the fact.
2. Make your own investigation of both sides.
- It's important to look at information from both sides of the table. Know the other side of the issue, too.
Understanding the other side will help you see where they're coming from, which can lead to discussion rather
than argumentation.
- Back it up with data. It helps to have the facts to back up your position. But of course, make sure that you
have concrete evidence to prove your stand. Make deep searching to ensure legitimate information. Don't go
for spammy sites. Rather, stick to well-trusted sites, such as .gov or .edu sites that use facts and statistics to
back up their claims. Also, always think about who is sponsoring the information you're viewing.
-If they are on one side of the issue, the information could very well be skewed.
3. Weigh evidences of each side.
- We are trying to avoid biases here. Always keep an open mind by welcoming and recognizing the strength of both
sides. So make sure that you check the information of each side and from there, you can proceed with number.
4. Take your stand.
- Once you studied the issue presented and the evidences of each side, this is the time you’ll take your stand. This is
when you choose your side and prove your points confidently. - Taking a stand in an essay takes multiple forms. For
example, while a “claim” (a statement of what should be) is the most common type of opinionated thesis statement,
it is not the only kind. One can also propose an idea or process, evaluate something, provide interpretation or take a
side in a comparison Build a platform.
5. Establish ways to be heard.
- You have to build your platform in spreading your message. Taking a stand does not end with deciding or determining
your position in an issue. If you want to make your message stronger, deeper, and more impactful, find a way to save
it so that people can always find it while you continue to work on something new.
- Students like you can make ways to be heard. There are online spaces where you are allowed to create an account
as long as you have your parent’s consent. There, you can start your blog where you can make written post to begin
taking an action after taking a stand.
- Avenues like blogs and podcasts are just some online spaces where you can express your stand in any issue you care
about.
- Write a blog. Record a podcast. Shoot a video. Better yet, do all of those things and do them all at once. Then do
them again and make updates on them.
ACTIVITY:

The Philippines is located along the Ring of Fire, or typhoon belt. Because of this, the country has suffered from a
tremendous number of deadly typhoons, earthquakes, volcano eruptions and other natural disasters. Annually,
approximately 80 typhoons develop above tropical waters, of which 19 enter the Philippine region and about six to nine
make landfall. The Philippines is named as the country most exposed to tropical storms in the world. Violent tropical
storms, such as the latest Haiyan typhoon, can generate 10 times as much energy as the Hiroshima atomic bomb. Such
drastic weather destroys homes, villages, and families. Often the survivors are the children, minus their parents. Natural
disasters often give birth to orphans.

Match the statement of the speaker about his/her actions on taking his stand with the process used. Write the
letter of your answer on the space before the number.
