5.0 TESTS

All test results shall be provided for review and acceptance by SEC.

5.1 Type (Design) Tests

Following type (design) tests shall be performed on a representative unit or on

the first unit of every new design or rating. The compression connectors (dead-
end, mid span splice, repair sleeve and Tee Tap connector) shall be assembled
in accordance with the manufacturer’s recommendations on the conductors of
the size and type with which these are to be used. The conductor to be used for
these tests shall be arranged by the manufacturer. The test results shall be
supplied to SEC:

5.1.1 Mechanical Type Test

The assembly when tested in accordance with BS 3288-1 or ANSI

C119.4 shall withstand a load of minimum ninety five percent (95 %)
of the rated strength of the conductor. There shall be no movement of
the conductor relative to the connector and no failure of the connector
due to slip during one-minute hold period at ninety percent (90 %) of
the conductor rated strength.

TRANSMISSION MATERIALS STANDARD SPECIFICATION 12-TMSS-02, Rev. 0

5.1.2 Electrical Type Tests

In lieu of the actual type tests, certified test reports of tests performed
on an identical unit may be submitted to SEC for review and approval
during the bidding stage.

a. Resistance Test

The electrical resistance of the assembly when tested in

accordance with BS 3288-1 or ANSI C119.4 shall not exceed
seventy five percent (75 %) of the measured resistance of the
equivalent length of the conductor. The test shall be made with
a direct current and test shall be repeated with the polarity and
the average of the two results taken as the measured value.

b. Heat Cycle Test

A tensile load of about twenty percent (20 %) of the rated

strength of the conductor shall be applied to the assembly and
shall be tested in accordance with BS 3288-1 or ANSI C119.4.
Test current shall be passed continuously through the assembly
for period as may be necessary to raise the conductor
temperature 40ºC above the ambient temperature. The current
shall then be interrupted and the conductor shall be allowed to
cool within 5ºC above the ambient temperature. The sequence
of operations shall be repeated for 250 cycles of heating and
cooling.

During the last five cycles the maximum temperature, measured

when the current is flowing, at any point on the surface of
compression connector, shall not exceed that of the conductor.
At the end of the test the connector shall meet the requirements
of the resistance test specified above. The connectors when
opened shall not show any sign of local heating, burning or
fusing of any part of the connector or of the conductor, as a
result of this test.

c. Corona (Visible Discharge) Test

The connectors shall be attached to a length of conductor of the

size and type with which these are to be used. The connectors
when tested in accordance with NEMA 107 shall not exhibit
any sign of visible corona at a power frequency voltage of a
value as specified in Clause 4.3.2 of this specification. For 380
kV, the test shall be performed on a quad bundle conductors
arrangement with inter spacing of 457 mm.

5.2 Sample Tests

Sample tests to be carried out on the compression connectors shall include but
not be limited to the following:
