FESRIVALS AND THEATRICAL FORMS OF CHINA AND INDONESIA

INDONESIA
FESTIVALS
1. BALI DANCE FESTIVAL
The festival began when the primitive locals created and performed various dances
that served as rituals against evil and bad.
Bali dancers learn the craft as children from their mothers as soon as they are born.
In the womb, they are played the Balinese music and are taught to dance with their
hands before they can walk. Official training as a Bali dancer starts as young as
seven.
Balinese Traditional Dance
a. Barong Dance – it features a fight between good and evil.
b. Legong Dance – a dance that tells the story of a king who finds a lost maiden
and holds her captive.
c. Kecak Dance – it is sometimes referred to as the fire dance because it is
accompanied by flames of fire. It is originated in the 1930s and is performed
primarily by men.

THEATRICAL FORMS
1. Wayang Kulit
Historical records show that wayang kulit dates back to the 800s, and thus considered
to be Indonesia's oldest freestanding puppet type.
Wayang Kulit is a traditional form of a puppet-shadow. Wayang performances are
usually held at certain rituals like thanksgiving to God for the abundant crop,
cleansing children for bad luck, celebrating birthdays, Independence Day, or other
Indonesian Holidays.
