State the work energy principle. Derive the work energy equation for translation.
A block weighing 2500 N rests on a level plane for which coefficient of friction is 0.20,
this block is pulled by a force of 1000 N acting at an angle of 300 to the horizontal. Find
the velocity of the block after it moves 30 m starting from rest. If the force of 1000 N is
then removed, how much further will it move? Use work energy method.

8 A vertical shaft 100 mm in diameter and 1 mm length has its upper end fixed to the
ceiling. At the other end it carries a disc of weight 5000 N having a radius of gyration of
450 mm. The modulus of rigidity for the material of the shaft is 0.8 N/mm2.
Determine the frequency of torsional vibrations and transverse vibrations if E = 2
N/mm2.

(b) A body of weight 500 N is pulled up an inclined plane, by a force of 350 N the inclination of plane is 35°
to the horizontal and the force is applied parallel to the plane. Determine the coefficient of the friction.

5 (a) A 400 gram package lying on a horizontal surface is attached to a horizontal string which passes over a
smooth pulley. When a mass of 200 grams is attached to the other end of the string, the package is on
the point of moving. Find the coefficient of friction.

(b) Block A of weight 520 N rest on the horizontal top of block B having weight 700 N as shown in figure.
Block A is tied to a support C by a cable at 30° to the horizontal. Coefficient of friction is 0.45 for all
contact surfaces. Determine the minimum value of the horizontal force P just to move the block B. Find
also the tension in the cable.

8 (a) Two electric trains A and B leave the same station on parallel lines. The train A starts from rest with
a uniform acceleration of 0.2 m/s2 and attains a speed of 45 km/h. which is maintained constant
afterwards. The train B leaves 1 minute after with a uniform acceleration of 0.4 m/s2 to attain a
maximum speed of 72 km/h which is maintained constant afterwards. When will the train B overtake
the train A?
(b) A stone is thrown up with a velocity of 20 m/s. While coming down, it strikes a glass pan, held at half
the height through which it has risen and loses half of its velocity in breaking the glass. Find the
velocity with which it will strike the ground.

9 (a) Explain the concept of D’Alembert’s Principle.
(b) A body of mass 200 kg is initially stationary on a 15° inclined plane. What distance along the incline
must the body slide before it reaches a speed of 10 m/s? Take coefficient of friction between the
body and the plane as 0.1.

9 A pile of mass 1000 kg is driven 10 cms in to the ground by every blow of the pile driver of 200 kg
