Additionally FileNet Content Manager in general can be deployed in a virtualized environment based on
hardware hypervisor technology, since such Virtualization technology is designed to be transparent to the
software that they host, and not require special effort from the software vendors for their use. The availability
of Licensing, Technical, and Performance support is limited to technologies outlined in the above Virtualization
Policy. Testing in the IBM labs has found the software transparency claim by hypervisor based virtualization
technology to be largely true; systems deployed in a virtualized environment might have issues related to
performance and communication with peripheral devices, and other hardware components. With regard to
performance, running in a virtualized environment is likely to result in increased CPU utilization, or other
hardware resource consumption. Because of this increase, system workload capacity might be reduced, and
transaction response times might increase. To that end, assuming that the virtualized machine is configured
per the FileNet Content Manager requirements, IBM supports deployments of all FileNet Content Manager
products, unless otherwise noted, in a virtualized environment. However, in a virtualized environment, IBM
might not be able to resolve issues related to system performance or issues that IBM suspects are related
to communication with peripheral devices, and other hardware components, such as network cards and disk
controllers. In the event that IBM determines that a particular issue is specific to virtualization technologies
(such as performance or communication with peripheral and hardware components), IBM might require that the
customer reproduce the issue in a non-virtualized configuration. Due to the nature of virtualization technologies,
IBM cannot guarantee resolutions to issues that are caused because a deployment is virtualized. Additionally,
it is the customer’s responsibility to ensure that other associated third-party software is supported to run in the
given virtualized environment such as application servers, databases, storage and operating systems by the
original vendor of that software.

Summary
Application server-based clients of Content Platform Engine that are using the EJB transport, including other
FileNet components, must use the same application server brand and major version as the Content Platform
Engine.The application server can run on any operating system supported by both the application server vendor
and FileNet Content Manager. However, all application servers must either be running a Windows operating
system, or all the application servers must be running a Unix operating system.The Content Platform Engine
only supports 64-bit application servers using a 64-bit Java Runtime Environment (JRE). Clients running
in a 32-bit application server environment may connect with Content Platform Engine running on a 64-bit
application server environment.The Content Platform Engine supports the 64-bit Java Runtime Environment
(JRE) versions that are provided with an application server unless otherwise noted. Also ensure that the JRE
used by any Content Platform Engine clients, including custom applications, is compatible with the JRE used
by the application server.When selecting a JDBC driver, refer to the JRE requirements documented by both
the database vendors and by the application server vendors to ensure that you are configuring a compatible

2. If you are unable to create data source via CMUI and get error "timeout waiting for completion" and
increasing the Activation timeout to 600 sec via WebLogic console does not fix the problem, use an older
JDK version: jrockit-jdk1.6.0_33-R28.2.4-4.1.0FileNet P8 supports separated HTTP server functionality as
supported by the application server.

4. Do not use the native JDBC Drivers installed with the WebLogic Servers. Instead, update the WebLogic
Server's classpath to include the location of the external JDBC driver classes. If the error “timeout waiting
for completion” occurs when attempting to create a data source, and increasing the Activation timeout in
the WebLogic console does not resolve the issue, change the JDK being used by WebLogic to jrockit-
jdk1.6.0_33-R28.2.4-4.1.0
5. Connection issues may occur when using a WebLogic 12.2.1 vertical cluster with Content Platform Engine
and Content Navigator. The issue is resolved by applying the Oracle WebLogic 12.2.1.2 patch 25360870.
Databases
Summary
The FileNet Content Manager components do not need to run on the same operating system as the database.
Unless otherwise noted, the listed databases are supported on any operating system or hardware environment
that is supported by the database vendor. This includes appliance-based offerings and cloud-based offerings,
as long as the device- or cloud-based database offering provides full access to all of the features of a database.
For information on the operating systems on which the databases can be deployed, refer to the appropriate
database vendor documentation. In this report, refer to the notes associated with a specific database for
information on any limitations on the operating system support driven by FileNet Content Manager.The
database used for IBM Content Navigator does not need to be the same type as the database used for Content
Platform Engine.In general, advanced, proprietary technologies from the database vendors such as data
encryption or partitioning technologies are not supported unless such support is specifically stated. Database
encryption technologies that work at a disk sector level however should be transparent to the P8 server engines.
Examples of these types of solutions include IBM InfoSphere Guardium Encryption Expert, Oracle Tablespace
Encryption, and Vormetric Database Encryption Expert. IBM ECM products do not qualify or support these
technologies themselves, but we do tolerate P8 databases running in an environment where a transparent
disk sector encryption technology has been deployed. When configuring a highly-available environment, any
of the following database configurations can be used: •DB2 active/passive configurations •DB2 pureScale
(active/active) configuration • Oracle active/passive configurations •Oracle RAC (active/active) configuration
• Data sources used for workflow systems are limited to 2 Oracle RAC nodes. Object stores that are not
collocated with workflow systems do not have the same restriction • Oracle RAC cannot be used with the CFS-

Databases Notes
1. DB2 Native Encryption The DB2 Native Encryption feature introduced in 10.5 FP5 is supported. Note
however that enabling DB2 Native Encryption adds a substantial performance impact on DB2 server CPU
usage and response times. Please test in a staging environment first, and make sure that you have sufficient
processing power in your DB2 servers to support enabling this feature. JDBC Requirements Minimum
JDBC version is 4.16.53. JDBC Driver 4.17.28 is not supported with DB2 10.5 FP2 because the following
error occurs when creating a P8 domain: The database access failed with the following error: ErrorCode
-4,203, Message '[jcc][t4][2041][11392][4.15.100] Error executing XAResource.start(). Server returned
XAER_PROTO. ERRORCODE=-4203, SQLSTATE=null' SQL: ""SELECT 1 FROM FNGCD for update with

HA/Load balancing technology, is not supported. • Oracle 12.1.0.2 • This version of Oracle can be used with
ojdbc6.jar and ojdbc7.jar. • Oracle 12.1.0.2 Container Databases (CDB) and Pluggable Databases (PDB)
are supported. When using these types of Oracle databases, use the Oracle Service Name and not the
Oracle Service ID when specifying a JDBC connection in the Content Platform Engine Configuration Manager

2014 AlwaysOn Availability Groups feature does not support cross-database transactions. If you are using
these types of transactions, data might be lost when a failover occurs. Refer to the following tech note for
more details: https://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms366279 This issue is resolved in Microsoft SQL
Server 2016; therefore, if using AlwaysOn Availability Groups is required, consider using SQL Server 2016
and not SQL Server 2014. Failover Cluster Instances can also be used as a high-availability solution and
are not subject to the same limitation with regard to the use of cross-database transactions. Upgrading,
installing an AddOn, or adding a custom property to a class might hang or fail when using SQL Server 2014.
A change was made in SQL Server 2014 such that when an ALTER TABLE statement is executed to add
a null-able fixed length (non-sparse) column to a table, and the allocation size of the columns including
overhead exceeds 8060 bytes, an update is also performed on each row in the table to insert a null value for
the new column. The update is done to confirm that the data in each row fits into the page size limit of 8060
bytes so that later operations such as inserts or table rebuild do not fail at run time. Some object store tables
might exceed this 8060 byte limit, and therefore would be affected by this issue. For tables in large object
stores, this update may take hours, or even days, to complete. To avoid this issue, install SQL Server 2014
RTM Cumulative Update 4 and enable trace flag 647. Refer to the following technote for more details: http://

repositories that meet the LDAP V3 specification, but that are not explicitly listed as supported by WebSphere,
you must configure the LDAP server using a custom LDAP feature with an appropriate filter and you will need
to obtain the appropriate filter information from your LDAP vendor. LDAP-related issues that occur at runtime

software, IBM determines an issue is related to the encryption
product, IBM can require that the customer reproduce the
problem in an environment without file system encryption. File
storage areas on encrypted NTFS devices are not supported.

Server Content Platform Engine supports Magnetic Network Attached All supported AIX

Retention interface that uses the Tivoli Storage Manager API is
supported. • File system interfaces such as NFS and CIFS are

that file systems with high latency can experience performance
problems. If threads are blocked waiting for I/O to complete,
severe resource contention and poor performance can result. File
systems are required to be in read/write mode; file systems in
write once, read many (WORM) mode are not supported as file
storage areas.
Server Content Platform Engine supports Hitachi Content Platform 5.x, All supported AIX
6.x, 7.x, 8.x, and 9.x as a Fixed Content Device. Authenticated operating systems

• Content Hitachi Content Platform namespaces in both compliance and
Platform enterprise mode are supported. The default namespace is not

Hitachi Content Platform using the HTTP REST interface, and

software is required to use Hitachi Content Platform as a Content

Platform cannot be used as a CIFS or NFS mounted file system
as the root directory for a file storage area or the staging directory

device that does not allow file operations needed by the Content
Platform Engine. For performance reasons, Hitachi does not
recommend using the S3 interface for Hitachi Content Platform.
The Hitachi Content Platform is not FIPS certified.
Server Content Platform Engine can be configured to store content All supported AIX
• Content in Dell EMC Centera Basic, Governance, and Compliance operating systems
Platform Edition Plus storage devices. This capability is supported with
Engine the Dell EMC Centera SDK provided on the Content Platform
Engine media and includes all higher versions of CentraStar
that are compatible with this version of the SDK. Refer to the

version included in the CPE installer. Note that not all versions of
the operating systems supported by the Content Platform Engine

Glossary
Bitness Compatibility of the product with the bit version support that is provided by an
operating system. Different parts of a product might run on the same operating
system but support different application bitness. For example, one part of the
product might run only in 32-bit mode, whereas another might support 64-bit
tolerate mode.
31: The product or part of the product runs as a 31-bit application in a 31-bit
operating environment.
32: The product or part of the product runs as a 32-bit application in a 32-bit
operating environment.
64-tolerate: The product or part of the product runs as a 32-bit application in a
64-bit operating environment.
64-exploit: The product or part of the product runs natively as a 64-bit application
in a 64-bit operating environment.
Co-packaged Additional products that are included in the product package.
Co-installed Additional products that are included in the product package and installed when
the product is installed.
Deployment unit Deployment Structure identifies pieces of a product that can be independently
deployed onto one or more machines in a distributed infrastructure.
• The top level of the deployment structure consists of one or more deployment
units. There are four possible deployment units that a product might support:
Desktop, Server, Agent or client, Mobile.
• Deployment units may be further divided into deployable components
Desktop deployment unit: Part of the deployment structure intended for use
by a single user, typically installed on the user desktops. Examples of desktop
deployment units include development tools, administrative tools, stand-alone
business applications.
Server deployment unit: Part of the deployment structure that can provide
services to multiple clients, providing the server in a client-server architecture.
Examples of server deployment units include application servers, management
servers, database servers and server-based business applications.
Agent or client deployment unit: Part of the deployment structure that allows
remote connection between software. Examples of agent of client deployment

units include agents in management system that are installed in the same tier
as the managed resources, a remote application, or database clients that are
installed with the software accessing the remote services.
Mobile deployment unit: Part of the deployment structure intended for use by
a single user, typically installed on a mobile device. An example of a mobile
deployment unit is a mobile application.
Hypervisor A virtual machine in which a product can run on a guest operating system.
Limited operating By default, the supported guest operating systems for a product and a hypervisor
system support are the operating systems that are supported by both the product and the
hypervisor. If a product restricts support to a subset of these operating systems,
this restriction will be indicated by specifying that there is Limited Operating
System Support.
Operating system The minimum operating system maintenance level that is required to run on the
minimum product.
Prerequisite The minimum maintenance level that is required for the prerequisite to work with
minimum the product.
Product minimum The minimum maintenance level that is required for the product to run on the
operating system, on an hypervisor, or work with a prerequisite product or
supported software.
Supported software The minimum maintenance level that is required for the supported software to
minimum work with the product.
Long Term Support A Long Term Support Release is a recommended product level for which support,
