1 Introduction
FP99A is a software package for the FP900 Thermal System and allows a computer to con-
trol the FP90 Central processor. You can attach the FP84HT (FP84) or the FP85 Measuring
Cell to this control unit to record DSC curves, and in case the optional photo monitor is con-
nected to the FP84, the photo monitor curves can also be recorded.
FP99A is an application program that runs under Microsoft® Windows 3.x in standard or 386
enhanced mode. In order to work with FP99A, you must have Windows installed on the
computer and be familiar with its operation.
Thus, these operating instructions only describe the menus of the FP99A software package
and their commands; for installation and configuration of Windows please refer to the Win-
dows User's Guide.
FP99A has several experimental curves with the corresponding temperature programs
stored so that you can familiarize yourself with the evaluation procedures before you start
your own measurements.
You can work with the other application programs of Windows, e.g. copy curves to the Card-
file, Write or Paint files. Programs such as Microsoft® Word or Aldus® Pagemaker also ac-
cept FP99A curves.
This symbol is used in the Operating Instructions to mark additional information to the subject.
* This symbol is used in the menu lists in this Operating Instructions to mark new functions of the
FP99A Software. The previous FP99 Software doesn’t have this functions.
2 System requirements
• Personal computer:
− at least with a 80286 processor running with a clock rate of 12 MHz or faster
− with MS-DOS operating system version 5.0 or higher
− with a hard disk
− with a 3 1/2" disk drive
− with at least one serial (RS232) and one parallel port, and a port for the connection of
a Microsoft mouse
− with at least 2 MB RAM (640 KB and 1024 KB additional memory configured as "ex-
tended memory"; please consult the Owner's Manual of your memory extension; the
available memory should be declared in the setup procedure for your computer as de-
scribed in your PC's Operating Manual)
− with a graphics adapter card appropriate to the monitor
• Monitor:
− monochrome or color
• Printer:
− all that are supported by Windows
We recommend a PC of the 386 class (SX or DX) for satisfying system performance. On the
hard disk you should have at least some 15 MB free space, as Windows needs about 10 MB
and FP99A about 5 MB including applications. Most important for a responsive system are
mainly memory size and access time of the hard disk (preferably less than 20 ms), and a fast
screen interface. A high clock rate of your processor is only fully effective when the previously
mentioned conditions are met.
3 Standard equipment
− 1 set operating instructions
− 1 3 1/2" diskette for the appropriate drive
− 1 connection cable computer <-> FP90 depending on your serial port, in accordance with
your order equipped with:
∗ 9-pin connector (FP99AAT): Order No.: ME-17853
∗ 25-pin connector (FP99APS): Order No.: ME-17854
Backup of your program diskette: Please make backup copies of your software before us-
ing it the first time. It is easy as the program diskette is not copy protected. To backup your
programs you can either use the DOS command DISKCOPY, or in Windows make use of
the file manager. Please take notice that there are sub directories on your diskette which
have to be copied with their files as well. Please keep your original diskettes at a safe place.
When starting the FP99A the first time, the FP99A menu shows up together with the mes-
sage:
Link to DSC instrument disabled!
• Confirm Ok
• Select Instrument link in the Setup menu and then choose the serial port (COM1 or
COM2) to which the FP90 is attached.
If you have loaded FP99A and stipulated the serial port but not yet switched on the FP90,
you are shown the following message:
FP90 not connected or switched off!
• Switch on FP90 and confirm Retry. You are shown the message:
Retry to open COM1 (COM2)?
• Confirm Retry.
You can view the software version by selecting the command About ... under Help.
5 The Menus
5.1 Help
The FP99A software contains an extensive online help text. The menu Help can be opened
at any time. With Contents you find help text about the different possible orders and evalua-
tions.
With About.. the version of the software is indicated.
With Search an alphabetical list of expressions appears. Select the desired expression and
click onto Show Topics. A list with all expressions connected to the selected expression ap-
pears. Select the desired expression and click onto Goto. The explanation for the selected
expression appears.
Leave the menu Help with Exit.
5.2 Setup
This menu is used for definition of the parameters that are needed for control of the
FP90/FP85 or FP90/FP84 Thermal System and for evaluation of the experimental data.
Some parameters have already been defined. Setup has the following submenus:
5.2.2 Calibrate
You are shown the message:
Automatic Heatflow Calibration
For determination of the cell's calorimetric sensitivity E In, insert an indium sample and
enter its weight below:
• If you wish to determine the calorimetric sensitivity EIn of the measuring cell, prepare a
crucible containing indium and enter the sample weight.
• If you select Cancel, then confirm the message "Calibration canceled" with Ok.
After confirmation of Start, the following message appears:
Sample inserted?
• If you confirm Ok, the measurement starts with the following temperature program:
− Start delay: 120 s. You can follow this time on the display of the FP90: The timer dec-
rements from 2 min to 0 s.
− Heating rate: 10 °C/min
− Start temperature: 130 °C
− End temperature: 180 °C
You can view the actual running measurement by checking the Running command in the
menu View. If it has already a check mark (√) the running view window will appear automati-
cally as soon as the first data is received. In case the Running command has no check mark,
select it in order to view the running measurement.
When the measurement is finished, you are shown the message:
Measurement finished.
• Confirm this message to receive the data of the calibration. If you wish to accept the new
value for EIn, confirm Yes to receive the message:
You can save the new value for E In using the 'Cell parameters' command in the Setup
menu.
• Confirm Ok and select: Cell parameters
The temperature scale of the FP99A DSC diagrams indicates the temperature of the reference
crucible, provided τlag is correct.
τlag is determined at different heating rates by means of measured onset temperatures of the
melting peaks of pure substances. The measured onset temperatures are plotted as a function
of the heating rates. The slope (unit: s) represents the required corrections.
5.2.4 Options
5.2.5 Colors
5.2.9 Printer
5.2.10 Status
The Status command displays a dialog box with information about the connected instrument
status (see Operating Instructions Thermal system 900, Appendix B: Statusabfrage).

You are shown a list of the stored programs which you can use to load the one you require.
5.4.4 Save as
If you wish to save the inputted temperature program, select this command and enter the
name in the window that appears. Each program name ends automatically with the exten-
sion .fpp.
If you have not stored the program of the last measurement and select Calibrate in the Setup
menu or New in the program menu, you are shown the message:
Save the measurement program?
This message also appears when you close an FP99A session.
Data export: Save the file in the desired file type, e.g. ASCII text format (ASCII files can be used
for example in spreadsheets.
5.4.5 New
Program step: A program can have up to 9 steps that can be either dynamic or isothermal.
− Heating/cooling: Enter the start and end temperature, and the heating rate.
− Isothermal: Enter the temperature and time.
If you need another program step, click the right arrow of Step, select the condition and en-
ter the parameters. The start temperature of this step is already stored and corresponds to
the end or isothermal temperature of the preceding step.
With Clear you can delete a step.
Waiting time: for each step the default waiting time you entered in the Setup/Options is
automatically filled in, but you can change it for each step. It has to be greater than zero,
else the time of the previous step will be taken over.
You should always have the field Store Data clicked on in order to store the data of the indi-
vidual program steps. If you click it off, the data of this step are neither shown nor stored dur-
ing a measurement.
When using the FP84 cell with the optional photo monitor connected to the FP90, the Edit or
New window shows an additional check box for the Photo monitor curve. Selecting this op-
tion will cause the photo monitor curve to be recorded in the same FPD data file as the DTA
curve. You can make the curve visible with the command Photomonitor in the menu View.
When not selecting this option, the photo monitor signal will be ignored and only the DTA
signal will be stored.
The maximum temperature for the FP84HT cell is 375 °C and for the FP85 cell 400 °C. You are
shown an error message if you enter a temperature that is too high for the instrument in ques-
tion. However, FP99A cannot distinguish the FP84HT and FP84 cells; the latter can be heated
only to 300 °C!
• If you wish to delete the entries, select Cancel.
• If you first wish to save the temperature program, select Ok and the Save as command
under Program.
• If you wish to start the measurement immediately, select Start.
If you wish to follow the display of the measurement on the screen, select Running (current
measurement) in the menu View. A small window appears that you can enlarge. If this
command was already selected before the measurement started, the window will automati-
cally appear when the first data of the measurement is processed.
In the meantime, however, you can also evaluate other curves or create and save a new
program. The window of the current method remains on the screen if you do not close it
(double click on the Control menu field in the upper-left corner of the running view window,
or select Close from this Control menu field, or Running from View in the main window).
When the measurement is finished, the following always appears on the screen:
Measurement finished.
• Confirm this message and the "running" window disappears.
5.5 Data
In this menu you can store measured curves, open and close stored curve files and print out
information and raw data of the measurement. Data has the following commands:
When you have completed a measurement, the file is still open. An 8-column field appears
under the FP99A menu. The first column shows unnamed.
If you double click this field, you are shown the experimental curve on the screen. Another
double click in the field causes the curve to disappear. The mouse pointer now changes to
crosshairs within the curve region.
If a measurement comprises several steps, all steps are shown in succession.
5.5.1 Open
You are shown a list with all stored curve files that you can load. The selected curve will ap-
pear on the screen.
You can load a maximum of 11 curves that are identified by different colors on a color moni-
tor, or by different types of lines on a monochrome monitor. The 11-column field appears in
the top window with the appropriate file names and colors or lines. A double click in one col-
umn causes the appropriate curve to disappear from or reappear on the screen.
If the superimposed curves have not been measured with the same heating rate, the
x-axis changes from a temperature to a time scale.
5.5.2 Save as
5.5.3 Close
5.6 View
This menu is responsible for the representation of the measured curves and has the follow-
ing commands:
5.6.1 Select
5.6.2 Scale
• With Scale you are shown the curve with the inputted scale.
• With All steps you are shown the original curve on the screen.
• With Full step you are shown the inputted curve step.
• With Cancel you discontinue the entries.
5.6.3 Zoom
You can enlarge a section of the curve to full screen size by selecting the desired region with
the mouse:
• Press the left mouse button at the start of the desired region and drag the mouse over the
part of the curve you wish to enlarge, then release the button. The resulting window is
then enlarged with Zoom.
You can also enlarge a section of the y- or x-axis using the same procedure:
• Drag the mouse along the appropriate axis outside the screen area. The resulting region
is then enlarged with Zoom.
5.6.5 Info
You are shown a window containing information on the temperature program and the sample
of the measured curve. You can enlarge the window and move it to any desired location.
5.6.6 Text
You are shown a field in which you can enter text. You can move the text with the mouse to
any desired location and fix it in position with a click.
5.6.7 Copy
If you wish to paste a curve that you have evaluated and annotated into another Microsoft
application program, copy this with Copy to the Clipboard.
5.6.8 Print
With this command you can print out the contents of the window.
the curves can only be printed in black, even if you have a color printer.
To have a constant size of the printout, maximize the window with the marked (→) button
button to maximize
5.6.13 Tangent
The Tangent function generates a tangent to a specified part of the curve. This part can be
a point, indicated with a mouse click or a range of points, indicated by dragging a small win-
dow over the desired part of the curve. After having selected the point or range, clicking tan-
gent calculates and presents the tangent.
5.6.16 Smoothing
The Smoothing function allows you to smooth curves containing undesired noise. After hav-
ing clicked smoothing, a window appears entitled create smoothed copy. With a scroll bar
the degree of smoothing can be indicated. The smoothed curve is presented and the file
name in which the first symbol is replaced by $ appears in the legend bar. All evaluation
functions are active.
Note that high degrees of smoothing result in long calculation times and may distort the shape
of the curve. The degree of smoothing of a smoothed curve can always be changed later (if the
original curve is still present).
5.6.18 Running
You are shown a window that shows the curve of the current measurement. You can move,
enlarge or close this window.
5.7 Evaluation
With the aid of this menu you can calculate onset, endset, glass transition and peak tem-
peratures, melting ranges, enthalpy changes and crystallinity. Here, only the curve you wish
to evaluate may be shown on the screen and you must first define a point or region of the
curve before selecting the appropriate command. The menu has the following commands:
5.7.1 Select
If you have opened several curve files, Select lists them to allow you to choose the curve
you wish to evaluate.
You can then enlarge the section of the curve you wish to evaluate with the Zoom or Scale
command of the View menu.
5.7.2 Temperature/Time
You can determine a desired temperature or time on the experimental curve:
• Move the crosshairs of the pointer to the desired point and click the mouse: a cross ap-
pears.
• Select Temperature/Time: a field with the temperature (time) appears in which you can
enter text before or after the value. When you confirm Ok, you can move the value to the
desired location (see curve representation under Crystallinity).
5.7.4 Tpeak
You can determine the temperature of the peak, but you first have to mark its region (see
above: Peak area). The peak is marked with a cross and you are shown a field with the tem-
perature. You can add text to this value and move it to any desired location (see curve rep-
resentation below).
5.7.6 Crystallinity
In the Setup menu you have entered the polymers or other substances with the appropriate
theoretical values for 100% crystallinity. If you wish to calculate the crystallinity of a meas-
ured substance,
• First mark the peak region with the mouse, then select Crystallinity.
• Select the substance in the window and confirm Ok. A field with the substance name and
the crystallinity value appears. You can move these data to any desired location (see
curve representation).
5.7.13 Report
Clicking Report generates an ASCII text file containing evaluation results and information on
the sample and measurement. A window is presented in which the user can specify the file
name. This command is particularly useful for GLP purposes. With Word or another text
program you can open and edit files which you have saved.
5.7.14 Delete
The Delete function generates a window with a list of all performed evaluations. The user
can select the evaluation he wishes to delete. By pressing Ok, the deletion is carried out.
Pressing All will delete all evaluations.
5.7.15 Undo
The Undo command deletes the last performed evaluation. This command is normally used
to delete directly an incorrect evaluation.
5.7.16 Line
You can not delete drawn lines, values or test entries individually. If you wish to clear values or
text entries, double click the screen. You then get the whole curve of the selected step again,
and all your entries will be deleted. If you are working on a curve with several steps, double
click again in the screen to get all steps on the screen.
First abort or stop any running measurement and save the modified measurement program
and any unsaved curve (if you wish). Then double click on the Control menu icon in the
upper-left corner of the main window or click once on the Control menu icon and select
Close. If you did not save all your work before closing FP99A, you will be prompted to do so.
The selections of the menu items TRF event, Photo monitor and Running will be saved in
the WIN.INI file when leaving the FP99A Software, and are reactivated when starting again.

You can save the new value for E In using the 'Cell parameters' command in the Setup
menu.

vorher wieder kennzeichnen müssen (siehe: Peak area).
starten wieder aktiviert.
