Introduction

Summer projects are now essential for a

successful career in the 21st century. They
provide students with a toolkit for future
success, including building on current interests,
developing new skills, and gaining soft skills
like collaboration and leadership.

The School Education Department in West

Bengal plans to design personalized summer
projects for students from class 5 to 12, taking
into consideration their interests and level, and
conceptualizing the projects around the school
syllabus to deepen knowledge.

Objectives

● Encouraging students to step out of school & gain confidence and employability skills
● Students to acquire skills on Critical thinking, Creativity, Collaboration & Communication
● Tie up between Govt and Non Govt entities to create these projects

Outcomes
● Students acquire life skills
● Increased retention and attendance
● Students will improve their understanding of curricular and co-curricular topics
● Reduced incidence of seasonal migration

Salient Features (Class 5-6)

● A list of suggested topics based on subjects to be finalised by SCERT

● Selection of topics from the curriculum or from surrounding environment may be done by the
respective teachers /HOI
● Assignment of topics to students at individual/group/class level may be done by teachers as well
● Students will submit their work in the first week of school reopening after summer break
● Projects to be graded by subject teachers in line with Formative (F2) assessment as per PEACOCK
model
● A Teacher Support Manual will be shared with a brief description for each item mentioned in the
list of topics

Salient Features (Class 7-8)

Note: Students may be taken on Local Visit and/or assigned At Home Projects.
Local Visit At Home Project

● HOI will identify possible Institutes/Centres/
Places of importance where students can visit.
● HOI and nodal teacher will coordinate and
communicate with the institutes/centres.
● Location should be preferably within 3 km from
the school.
● Students will write a report based on what they
have observed and something that they have
learned through the visit.
● A list of suggested topics as provided by SCERT;
Schools may pick and choose from the list and/or
may identify other relevant topics as per need
● Selection and assignment of topics may be done
by the respective HOI/ Class Teacher
● A Teacher Support Manual will be shared with a
brief description for each item mentioned in the
list of topics

● Students will submit their work within the first week of school reopening after summer break.
● Projects/Reports to be graded by subject teachers in line with Formative (F2) assessment as per PEACOCK model

modify the list as needed
● Selection and assignment of topics may be done
by the respective HOI / Class teachers
● A Teacher Support Manual will be shared with a
brief description for each item mentioned in the
list of topics

● HOI to organize a meeting to parents to explain the importance of summer projects

● Students will submit their work within the first week of school reopening after summer break.
● Projects/Reports to be graded by subject teachers in line with the Internal Formative Assessment (survey, case study, nature study, model
making, and creative writing)

Projects: Suggested Topics

● Write a report based on something that you have learned through the Local Visit.
● Conduct a simple experiment at home to investigate how different liquids (e.g. water, oil, vinegar) interact
and write up your findings.
● Grow a small garden or plant and record the changes you observe over time in a journal.
● Study the physical features of India, including its mountains, rivers, and coastlines, and create a map of the
country.
● Explore the different types of soil found in West Bengal, and investigate how they affect agriculture and
farming.
● Investigate the concept of data analysis, including skills like collecting data, organizing data, creating
graphs and charts, and interpreting data to draw conclusions.
● Use simple geometry to design a maze or obstacle course and have friends or family members try to
complete it.
● Practice writing skills by creating a personal narrative about a cultural event or festival celebrated in West
Bengal.
● You are an astronaut looking at the Earth from the surface of the Moon. Write a short note on what you
see.

A full list of suggested topics to be finalised by SCERT and will be shared along with a Teacher Guideline. Schools
may add or modify the topics as per need.

Roles & Responsibilities

District Level Committee

1. Formation of District Level, Sub-division Level and Block Level Committees
2. Orientation of all district level stakeholders
3. Collation and finalization of district level plan
4. Sharing district level plan / monitoring report with the SCERT/SPO PBSSM
5. Assist Schools (Sub-division / Block Level) in identifying suitable places for undertaking
visit.
6. Develop a SOP for undertaking project visits
7. Sensitize all line Departments about the project and ensure safety and security of visiting
students
8. Take up suitable corrective measures, if required, to ensure that the project is implemented
as planned
9. Ensure wide publicity of the program and documentation

1. Shall orient all school teachers relevant for the
summer project (urban areas); ensure that the
Block Level Committees have oriented all
relevant school teachers under their jurisdiction
2. Extend all necessary support to the schools for
successful execution of project visits.

safe and secured visits for the participating

Roles & Responsibilities
Schools level – HOI/Teachers
1. Shall undertake necessary sensitization initiative with students / guardians regarding the summer project
2. Shall identify summer project topic for each class using the suggestive list of project topics prepared by the
SCERT. Consult the Teacher Support Manual regarding project implementation. May also take up any
other suitable topic, outside the provided list, as they deem fit.
3. Shall decide on mode of project implementation –
a. whether to include visit to a site or only home project work
b. whether the project shall be done by the students individually or in groups

4. Shall identify and liaison with local institutes, within 3 KM from school, if visits are to be conducted.
5. Shall share their plan and subsequent monitoring report with the Block / Sub-division Level Committee
6. Shall assign summer projects to students before commencement of summer vacation in schools.
7. Shall keep the Block / Sub-division Level Committee appraised of the planned visits with all necessary
details
8. Shall supervise such visits and undertake all necessary steps to ensure safety and security of visiting school
children with special reference to the CWSN.
9. Shall undertake necessary assessment of the projects submitted by the students
10. Shall maintain all relevant records regarding the summer project in their schools and good documentation 12
