Abortion is a controversial issue of reli-
gious and social acceptance. People that are
pro-life claim that abortion is the murder of
a human being and is much like genocide.
On the other hand, people on the pro-choice
side claim that abortion is neither murder
nor genocide, and that a woman should
have the right to choose whether she wants
to have an abortion.
The Radford University College Republi-
cans invited the Center for Bio-Ethical Re-
form to present a pro-life campaign on cam-
pus. Although within their rights of freedom
of speech, this demonstration has caused
an uproar within the Radford community.
Many students, as well as faculty, have stat-
ed that they were insulted and offended by
the gruesome pictures and harsh portrayal
of abortion.
Fletcher Armstrong, the Southeast Re-
gion Director for the Center for Bio-Ethical
Reform, wanted to show individuals what
abortion does to the unborn.
Which human beings do we value and
which do we not value? In this country, es-
pecially in the past, we have devalued hu-
man beings based on arbitrary criteria. One
hundred and fty years ago there were peo-
ple that would be absolutely convinced that
they had to devalue a person because of their
skin color. Others would say that all human
beings should be treated equal. That is all we
are saying: that all people should be treated
equally regardless of how big or small they
may be, what their birth status might be, or
level of development. Those factors are all
arbitrary, said Fletcher Armstrong
The pro-life demonstrators wanted to
spread the word that we, as a society, as well
as individuals, should not deny someone the
right to live. When a woman is going to have
an abortion, it isnt just one body that is at
stake, it is two.
Three weeks after conception a heartbeat
is found and nine weeks into the pregnancy
all vital organs are in place. Abortion is not
as safe as the people doing them would like
you to believe and it can prevent someone
from becoming pregnant again, Armstrong
said.
What about rape victims or mothers-to-be
that are facing a life or death situation if a
pregnancy is continued? Several of the dem-
onstrators were women that had abortions,
one of which was a rape victim. All of these
women, however, claimed that they regret-
ted their decision to have an abortion and
that the majority of women that were vic-
tims of rape and had an abortion regretted
that decision later in life.
One of the women claimed, Not only is it
an act of violence because an abortion tears
the limbs off of a human being, it brings on
emotional and psychological repercussions
to the mother.
When asked about how abortion is geno-
cide, Armstrong said, It is an issue of per-
sonhood. He compared abortion and the
destruction of an unborn human being to
acts by the Nazis during the Holocaust,
claiming that, If its a wanted unborn child,
its called a baby. If its an unwanted unborn
child its dehumanized and called a fetus,
embryo or a potential child.
While, these demonstrators painted a
harsh reality of the destruction of life, pro-
choice demonstrators claimed that abortion
is not genocide and that its a womans body
and therefore, she should have the right to
make the decision to abort an unborn child.
In an analogy, Elly Shulte stated, You
can kill a tree by chopping it down with an
axe but you cannot kill a tree by picking up
a seed and preventing it from spreading its
roots.
Many students, like Shulte, felt that the
demonstration presented was unethical and
in poor taste. As a result, these students
were offended and insulted by the demon-
strators that penetrated the grounds of the
Radford campus.
Whether pro-life or pro-choice,
this issue is nothing new to our society and it
will certainly continue to be a controversial
issue as society changes.
Abortion protest on campus causes an uproar

Warning signs were an understatement for the gruesome pictures displayed in front of the Bonnie.
Pro-choice students took a stand and protested against the pro-life campaign.
in order to avoid a ticket; this is ridiculous. I
dont appreciate my class being interrupted or
my students missing part of class to move their
vehicle, it is incredibly disruptive.
When asked how long she had been waiting
for a space, Senior Ananda Underwood explains
that she gets to campus over 3 hours before her
rst class, just to nd a parking space,
I commute 4 days out of the week from Floyd
and get here at 9:30 in the morning every day
in order to get a space for my class at 12 its so
crowded and I cant believe I paid $70 for pure
incontinence that wasnt even included in my tu-
ition, said Amanda Underwood.
Underwood also complains about when she
cant nd a space, she will leave class early to
avoid a ticket.
The way I look at it I already paid the $70,
and now an extra 30 for a ticket, and I have a
small child to pick up from daycare, who charges
$15 if I am late picking him up, due to having to
park so far away from my classes. Underwood
said.
It isnt the money so much that people are
concerned about, its more so the frustration and
anxiety of trying to nd a space and get to class
on time. Students should not have to take away
from their education time in order to move a ve-
hicle to avoid penalties.
Some students have suggested either a park-
ing garage or working something out with the
City of Radford Police Department in allowing
commuters to park in neighborhoods along the
streets, accommodating those who drive from
various places in the New River Valley, some 40
minutes away or longer.
Another suggestion was that perhaps fresh-
man students living on campus would not be
permitted in the future to bring vehicles, as most
schools across Virginia do to save space.
