In the half an hour before a match, whats running through
your mind?
I think about the game and what I need to do to be successful. I am very
composed, but at the same time I am excited. Seeing all my team mem-
bers hyped up about the game pushes me.
Say youre on a break-away. The only thing between you and the back of the
net is the goalkeeper. Whats running through your head?
Usually when that happens, all that goes through my head is where to place the ball. I have to
realize where the goalkeeper is in respect with the goal, and I have to choose the perfect spot to
place it.
Say the Highs are down by three goals going into the 70th minute. What moti-
vates you to keep on playing just as hard as you did in the rst minute?
What motivates me to keep playing is that although we are down, the game of soccer can
change so quickly within 20 minutes. Giving it your all wont hurt, it can only help you and
your team. The chances of scoring and coming back can still happen with 20 minutes left.

two players who provided a few of the bright
spots from last year are no longer with the
team. Guard Gorkem Sonmez and center
Martins Abele both decided not to return to
RU after receiving signicant time on the
oor as freshmen. All in all, the Highlanders
can showcase just one senior on the squad
this year. One piece of the puzzle that is still
intact is sophomore guard Blake Smith, a
player who Jones specically pointed out as
being a bona de leader. Joining the returning
stars is a class of six freshmen; some of whom
Jones says will be able to help out immedi-
ately. Among them, the four that Jones staff
recruited are forward Jalen Carethers, guard
Javonte Green, forward Brandon Holcomb
and forward/guard Kyle Noreen. Incoming
freshmen R.J. Price and Brian Darden also
signed letters of intent in the waning days of
the Greenberg era before the previous coachs
resignation.
One thing that I think we needed to go out
and get this year was pure athleticism, Jones
said. We did a great job of bringing some
guys in late that will help us with the style we
want to play.
The mens basketball season doesnt of-
cially start until mid-November, but that
doesnt mean Jones and the team arent al-
ready preparing. The Highs are hard at work
on conditioning and team drills. After a disas-
trous campaign last season, the expectations
are piled high on the shoulders of a head
coach entering his rst season as the coach of
a Division I team, and on the shoulders of a
young team with limited experience and only
a handful returning starters to provide solid
leadership.
One thing that I want everyone to under-
stand is that there is a process to winning. As
far as whether or not well be a champion-
ship team this year, its hard to say, Jones
said. Our goal is going to be to go out and
win whatever game were playing. Our goal is
to go out there every night and compete, and
thats what were going to do.
