Lesson Focus: Introduction to Badminton

Lesson Objectives (SWBAT):


1. Understand the boundaries and fundamental rules of badminton.
2. Properly hold a forehand handshake grip and backhand thumb grip.
3. Build social-emotional skills through getting to know the other students that are in this module.

Introduction

Teach students how to set-up nets.

20-30 Boundaries tag. Singles


Entire court – singles court – doubles court – doubles service court. - Long and Narrow
Groups of 5-6. Doubles

30-35 Teach students singles halfcourt format & rotation.
Explain on whiteboard and have them practice.
Get to know students name and one thing about them each time you
rotate.

35-40 Students grab rackets. Forehand Grip Cues


Teach forehand handshake grip. - Shake hands with the racket.
Wrist circles – loose grip. - Make a “V” with thumb and index
- Relaxed grip
40-50 Teach forehand underhand and overhand. Forehand Cues
Brief demonstration of forehand serve. - Knees bent
Students get into formation & rally forehands. - Arm extended on dominant side
- Flick the wrist
- Angle of racket
50-60 Teach backhand thumb grip. Backhand Grip Cues
Teach backhand underhand and overhand. - Thumb on wide part of racket with strings
Brief demonstration of backhand serve. facing floor and ceiling.
Students get into formation & rally backhands. - Relaxed grip.

75-80 Explain routine for rest of unit:

- Grab a racket and rally for 5-10 mins.
