Lesson Focus: Serving, Service Return, Scoring, & Singles Gameplay

Lesson Objectives (SWBAT):


1. Perform long and short serves using forehand and backhand.
2. Receive serves using the ready position.
3. Understand the rules and scoring of badminton.

Introduction

20-25 Dynamic Warm-Up Lunges


- One lap around both sets of stairs - Knee & Foot Pointing Same Direction
- Shoulder circles - Land with Bent Knee
- Grab rackets - Lunges: 2x5/5/5 (Side, Diagonal, Front) per leg. - Chest Up

25-30 Take attendance.


Check for understanding of boundaries & grip.
Explain plan for today.
Students grab rackets.

30-35 Explain service rules. Service rules


Explain singles service vs. doubles service. - Serve from the right (even) & left (odd).
- Must be diagonal and underhand.
- Birdie below the waist on serve contact.
- Both feet on floor.
- Can’t cross service line.
- Can touch net if it lands in service box.
35-50 Explain types of serves: Forehand Serve
Forehand – Short & Long - Stagger stance: Non-racket leg forward.
- Practice forehand serves for 5-minutes - Forehand grip.
- Don’t return: catch & serve back. - Elbow close to the body.
- Hold birdie on hitting side with 2 fingers.
- Flick the wrist and contact below the
waist.
- More often used for long serves in singles
- Middle-back of service box.
B Backhand – Short & Long Backhand Serve
o - Practice backhand serves for 5-minutes. - Racket leg forward
- Don’t return: catch & serve back. - Backhand grip
d - Elbow out – chicken wing.
y - Flick the wrist and push the thumb.
- More often used for short serves in
doubles. Middle-front of service box.
50-60 Teach ready position. Ready position
Students practice returning serves – serve & return only. 5 then switch. - Feet shoulder width apart
- Athletic position: Knees bent
- Weight on balls of your feet
- Racket foot slightly forward or square
- Racket is up and around shoulder height
- Always come back to ready position
60-65 Teach scoring in badminton Scoring rules
- Games to 21, Win by 2
- Point Scored Every Serve.
- Throw birdie up for serve.
- Only switch sides when a point is won in
service.
- Players can’t touch the net or hit the
birdie before it crosses the net.
65-80 Singles full-court gameplay (comp vs. rec)
Count amount of comp vs. rec & divide up courts.
(i.e., 1 court per 4-5 students)
Assign courts and students play round robin games against each other,
up to 11.
80-85 Take down equipment.
