Five Science Tasks

National Curriculum coverage, by the end of the five sessions:

NC Identify and compare the suitability of a variety of everyday materials, including wood, metal,
plastic, glass, brick, rock, paper and cardboard for particular uses
Find out how the shapes of solid objects made from some materials can be changed by
squashing, bending, twisting and stretching.
IPC Different materials in the world around us
 Materials are used for making things.
 We use glass, metal, plastic, fabric and wood to make most everyday materials.
 Different materials have different properties.
 Materials can be natural or man-made.
 The 5 senses are sight, hearing, taste, touch and smell, the body reacts and interprets
messages from the environment via the senses.

IPC Properties of materials

Transparent – materials which let light through are called transparent.


Reflective – materials that reflect light are called reflective.
Magnetic - Magnetism is an invisible force or field that causes objects to attract or repel one
another.

Materials change as they age:
 Wood will fade, split or rot
 Metal will rust
 Paint can fade and peel
 Algae or moss can form on brickwork
