Within two weeks, passion transforms building

Woolworths, a well-known, three story retail store in Downtown Roanoke, closed in 1993 and is recently being restored. Although famous to the community, this 36,000 square foot building has a much different future than sales alone. A group of 20 Radford University students have been asked to see if they can help with renovations in their expertise: interior design. Interior design students have been chosen to assist in planning the interior layout for the upper two levels of the building, where 11 out of the 12 rooms will be transformed into apartments. The lower floor will likely consist of shops, stores, and restaurants, or be used for office space. This building site, located at 24 Campbell Ave., was recently renovated for commercial use, office space, residential units, and indoor parking. According to The Roanoke Times, the $800,000 real estate, paid for by Bill Elliot, chairman on the board at Davis H. Elliot Co., planned back in May to spend $3.5 to $4 million toward costs of construction. Once planning for condominiums, Elliot decided apartments were a better choice for the local real estate market. The assisting students are involved in the universitys Junior Residential Design Studio and are led by professor Greg Lewis of the Department of Interior Design and Fashion. Because of the project, students are able to put their skills and passion for design to good use. Considering the building is at such a blank state, it can be easily transformed. Standing up to their job description, RU interior design students are using the program at the university to the fullest. According to the school, Interior designers are creative, imaginative and artistic. They also need to be disciplined, organized and skilled business people. Combining knowledge with aesthetic vision, interior designers work with clients and other design professionals to develop design solutions that are safe, functional, attractive and meet the needs of the people using the space. As is the case with any career, the practice of interior design can be rewarding and fulfilling if hard work prevails. Excelling at interior design requires energy, technical proficiency, vision and dedication. Working with actual businesses and spending time and effort to design in two weeks, proves that the 20-member design team is living up to expectations.

Every year tourists visit the beautiful island of Jamaica. The exotic foods, culture, and environment are captivating. But what you see in the tourist area is not reality for the people of Jamaica. It is only an economic means to support the few who have the opportunity to work at a resort. The harsh truth is that Jamaica is an impoverished nation struggling to get by. Many dont have a means to support themselves or their families. Won By One, a mission in Harmons, Jamaica, works to assist Jamaicans in getting a better life. The first step is by providing suitable housing, and thats what this mission does. Every year, groups come to Harmons to build a house for a family in need. This year, a group of students from Radford University will be traveling to Harmons over spring break to build a house for a person in need. They will also be carrying marl, sorting and delivering supplies, repairing homes that are in desperate need of repair, digging tanks for sewer systems, and assisting school COURTNEY TREON | The Tartan teachers.
