Plagiarism
Plagiarism is a particular form of cheating. Plagiarism must be avoided at all costs and students who
break the rules, however innocently, may be penalised. It is your responsibility to ensure that you
understand correct referencing practices. As a university level student, you are expected to use
appropriate references throughout and keep carefully detailed notes of all your sources of materials
for material you have used in your work, including any material downloaded from the Internet. Please
consult the relevant unit lecturer or your course tutor if you need any further advice.

Student Declaration
Student declaration
I certify that the assignment submission is entirely my own work and I fully understand the
consequences of plagiarism. I understand that making a false declaration is a form of
malpractice.
I also understand that my assignment will be processed by electronic plagiarism software and
the results used to determine if any malpractice has taken place.

Submission Format:

The submission is in the form of an individual written report uploaded using the online
submission portal via Urkund. This should be written in a concise, formal report style,
using single spacing and font size 12. You are required to make use of headings,
paragraphs and subsections, as appropriate, and all work must be supported with
research and referenced using the Harvard referencing system. You are also
required to provide a bibliography of research texts using the Harvard referencing
format.

Word count guide for this assignments pass criteria is 2500 words. This
is only a guide and you will not be penalised in any way for being over or
under this word count. In addition, it should be noted that it is not an
indication of criteria achievement if your word count reaches 2500
words. The pass criteria can be achieved with a lower or higher word
count as it is the correct content of your work that achieves the criteria
not the word count.

Assignment Brief (RQF)

LO2 Examine the construction, function and operation of gas turbine engines and
components.

Assignment Brief and Guidance:

Scenario / Task
You have been employed as a trainee design technician in Leonardo Helicopters and
you have been tasked by your line manager to investigate and compile a written
report that analyses the performance of gas turbine engines and explains the
construction, function and operation of gas turbine engines and their associated
components.

Your report must include the following:

1. Clear diagrams and supporting text that illustrates the construction and
operation of the following gas turbine variants: Turbojet, Turbofan, Turboshaft
and Turbo prop.

2. A description of the function and operation of gas turbine engine intakes,

compressors, combustors, turbines and exhaust components (you must cover
all variants of these major components as applicable).

Conducting your own research, you are also required to calculate the relative
performance of the engine types as follows:

3. Calculate the thrust produced by a turbojet engine if the mass flow rate of air at
entry is 200Kgs-1 and its velocity at entry is 400ms-1 and the mass flow rate of
the exhaust gas is 8000Kgs-1 and its velocity is 1000ms-1.

4. A high bypass turbofan has a bypass ratio of 5:1. If the mass flow rate of air
entering the engine is 500Kgs-1, the velocity of the aircraft is 120ms-1, the
bypass velocity is 180ms-1, the exhaust velocity is 220ms-1 and the mass flow
rate at exit from the core is 200Kgs-1. Calculate the engine thrust.

5. Calculate the thrust produced by a turboprop aircraft if the free stream has a
mass flow rate of 200Kgs-1 and velocity of 100ms-1, the propeller accelerates
the air to a velocity of 450ms-1 and the mass flow rate and velocity at exhaust
from the core are 150Kgs-1 and 225ms-1 respectively.

Using the performance data calculated in paras 3 thru 5 above, conduct an analysis of
the constructional features, functions and operation of the four engine types detailed
in para 1 above, assessing the relative performance of each engine arrangement
stating why different engine types are used in aircraft.
