Pop Cycle Semester 2

Lesson Plan: Gagne Format

Teacher Candidate Name: Katelyn Wilson

Lesson Title: Divide by 3 and 4
Lesson Plan Grade Level: 3rd
Content Area: Mathematics
Materials List: Math fact assessment sheet, counters, division manipulative mat, division task
cards, clip boards, pencils, and early finisher worksheet.

CA Content Standard/s:
● California Mathematics Standard 3.OA.B.6: Understand division as an unknown-factor
problem.

ELA/ELD Standard/s:

ELD.P1.3.1.Br Exchanging information and ideas with others through oral collaborative
discussions on a range of social and academic topics

Lesson Objectives:
Students will be able to fluently divide numbers by 3 and 4.

Gaining Attention:How will you grab your students attention?

I will start the lesson by playing two videos for dividing by 3 and 4.

Informing Learners of the Objectives: What will students be able to do at the end of this lesson?
Today, we will be working on being able to fluently divide our 3 and 4 facts.

Relevancy: Did you state solid reasons why this lesson is important for the learner?
It is important to understand division because we will be able to evenly split things. For example, if we had a cookie
and we had to split it between your siblings, you would know how to make sure everybody got an even piece.

Recall and Review of Prior Knowledge:Do you need to review a previous lesson? Can you connect this to
students' background knowledge?
Before the activity, we will review our multiplication of 3’s and 4’s. Multiplication is the inverse of division and the
refresh of the multiplication facts will assist students in recognizing the division facts.

Presenting the New Material: Teach the objectives through lecture, demonstration, investigation, inquiry,
cooperative learning, etc.
I will teach the lesson through lecture and demonstration of dividing by 3’s and 4’s.
I will explain that division is the inverse of multiplication like subtraction is to addition.
We will use counters to physically represent division problems.

Eliciting the Desired Behavior: How do you engage your students in practicing the new material?
Guided Practice:
We will use the division manipulative mat to physically represent division problems for 3 and 4 facts. The problems
will gradually increase in difficulty.
Independent Practice:

There will be task cards around the room with different division problems for the 3 and 4 facts.
Students will be given a numbered sheet to fill in their answers for the problems. Once they
have completed all the problems they will see me to check their answers. If they got any
incorrect, I will help explain the correct answer. If they have all the problems correct, then I will
hand them an early finisher color-by-code math sheet for our math facts.

When all students are finished, we will complete a timed fact assessment of the 3 and 4 facts.
Students will grab their iPads to complete a Google form exit ticket about the lesson.

Feedback:
Feedback will be seen during student participation of the guided practice and the independent
practice.

Assessment: Objective #1 will be assessed . . .

The objective will be assessed via the task sheet and post-assessment.

Differentiation for Student with Special Needs:

This student will not be given a time limit for the fact assessment, and will be given cut
numbered squares for them to glue onto their answer sheet instead of writing the numbers
down.

Differentiation for Student who is an English Language Learner:

I will provide visual anchor charts of division around the room, as she is bridging in her
language development. She does need reminders of vocabulary which will be displayed in
writings and drawings on anchor charts.

Differentiation for Student who needs additional academic or emotional support:

I will do frequent check-ins with this student to provide academic support to make sure she
understands the lesson. This will also provide additional attention for emotional support, as
her parents recently divorced.
