A fascinating read, and up there in the top 5 books I’ve ever read in my life. It
provoked so much to ponder on in my own world and my hope is that you can find at
least one useful takeaway from the summary below.

•Our fundamental human nature has not changed; society has changed and humans
have adapted their natural behaviour to society.
•People may claim they are interested in the work itself or in contributing to
humanity, but often deep down what is really motivating them is the desire to have
attention, to have their self-opinion confirmed, to feel powerful and inflated.
•When people overtly display a characteristic like confidence or hyper-masculinity,
they are often concealing the contrary reality. Their shadow is leaking out.
•When someone acts “out of character” it is more often than not their actual
character showing - be wary.
•People respond to your energy and demeanour much more than your words, so
being a great leader and moving people depends on your ability to set the right tone
through your attitude, empathy and work ethic.

have the freedom to express more of your peculiarities. If you take this far enough,

•When dealing with people, your assessments of them shouldn’t be based on their
initial charisma, show or reputation, but rather their deeper character. You can gauge
someone’s strength of character by how well they handle adversity, their ability to
adapt and work with other people, their patience and ability to learn.
•All traits, to an extent, have an upside and can be translated into a superpower. E.g.
anger and aggression can be directed into productive work.
•People never do something just once.
•Your aim is to not become someone else but more thoroughly yourself, realising
your true potential. Don’t run away your flaws but rather see them as a true source of
power, and harness them in productive ways.
•Instead of focusing on what you want, you must train yourself to focus on others, on
their repressed desires and unmet fantasies.
•We must spend our time getting to know our own tastes and desires better, so that
we can distinguish what is something we truly need or want.

comes a dependency and a diminishing of health and mental powers. To have
deeper levels of pleasure, we have to learn to limit ourselves. When we operate with
a sense of purpose, we know the value of limiting ourselves.
•Some people are motivated by the pursuit of money and status - it can actually
supply someone with a lot of motivation. But their career choices then have no
connection to their actual inclinations.
•You have to act the part; you have to train yourself to not feel nervous and to shape
your appearance so that in your naturalness you don’t offend people or the group
values.
•You must transform yourself into a conscious and superior actor, capable of
altering your expression to fit the subgroup and impressing people with your
positive qualities.
•Among those whom we feel comfortable sense that we belong, we are less
defensive and more vulnerable to the contagious effect.
•As individuals, it’s hard to resist what others seem so certain about.
•But covered by thousands doing the same, we are shielded from feeling
accountable, which increases the likelihood we will take such risks in the group
setting.
•The longer a group exists and the larger it grows, the more conservative it will
