Letter to the Editor

I would like to bring attention to an issue our community and society is dealing with –

the importance of sleep and the impact that it has on our health. A good night’s sleep is a key

factor in maintaining a healthy life by allowing us to properly regulate our mood and emotions.

With a proper amount of sleep, individuals are able to think more clearly when faced with daily

challenges, whereas Individuals who are not achieving quality sleep on a daily basis are more

like to struggle with problems such as depression and anxiety.

Getting enough sleep is important as it keeps not only our minds healthy, but our bodies

as well. Individuals who are sleep deprived are placed at a higher risk of developing health

problems such as a comprised immune system, increased weight gain or obesity, and

cardiovascular issues such as hypertension. It is recommended that adults need about 7 to 9

hours of quality sleep, but people feel that they have too much going on. It is important to set a

bedtime routine to ensure that you are consistently getting a good quality sleep. While not

every person is the same, and some may need more sleep than others, this typically helps

adults ensure that they are promoting optimal health by decreasing the risk of underlying

health issues.

If you are concerned with the quality or amount of sleep that you are getting at night,

you may want to consult with your doctor to determine the potential problem and find the

solution that works best for you to improve your sleep.
