 Recognize the use and form of the simple past tense;
 Use the target structure by providing dialogues/interviews in the exploitation stage.
 Material(s): Textbook, cue cards and BB.

5 Warm-up
minutes -T greets SS Greeting
-T: Welcome to my class.
-T asks one of the SS to write the date on the BB.
25 Presentation:
minutes - T sets the scene and creates a need for SS.
- T: Today is………… Yesterday was…………… Setting the scene
-T tries to elicit information about the tenses used from SS.
-T: Which verb do we have in both sentences? And tense?
-SS provide their answers.
-T writes the title of the lesson on the BB.
-T asks SS to open their textbooks and read the text provided on page 15.
- T asks SS to underline verbs written in the past if there are any. Contextualization
- T asks SS to extract regular verbs and irregular ones and classify them in a table.
-T asks SS to do the activity (a) on the same page.
-T elicits answers from SS and writes them on the BB.
-T draws a chart on the BB.

-T fills in the chart and presents all forms of the simple past.
Form:
Regular form: Subject + infinitive + -ed
Irregular form: Subject + irregular form of the verb in the simple past.
NB: For the negative form, we use the auxiliary did + not.
For the interrogative form, we use the auxiliary did. (Yes/no questions).
Use
-T presents the use of simple past and writes it on the BB.
 We use the simple past to express past actions/events. It usually comes
with past time expressions like yesterday, some time ago, last year, when I
was a boy, etc…
Checking comprehension
- I cook couscous yesterday.
-T: What do you think? Negative
-SS: Wrong. checking
-T: Good. So what should we say?
-SS: I cooked couscous yesterday.
- I will play basketball last week.
-T checks Ss’ comprehension.
8 Practice:
minutes -T asks SS to complete the following sentences.
1. I …………….. (see) my ex-teacher in the supermarket a week ago.

22 Exploitation:
minutes - T provides SS with cue cards and asks them to make dialogues using the target
structure.
-T does not intervene unless SS need help in word finding difficulty.
