DRAMA
•It is both a literary and a
performing art.
•It is a form of art that depicts
life’s experiences.
Examples:
•Macbeth by William Shakespeare and Les
Misérables by Victor Hugo
•In the Philippines we have several examples
of these such as the Dekada ‘70, adaptation
of many Philippine Literature such as Noli
Me Tangere and El Filibusterismo, Mga
Kwento ni Lola Basyang, etc.
TWO MAJOR
TYPES OF
DRAMA
Tragedy
TRAGEDY
It presents a serious subject
matter about human suffering
and corresponding terrible events
in a dignified manner.
TRAGEDY
Example:
Play the Judas by Jesus T. Peralta

The play revolves on the three

characters: father and his two
sons - Ruben and Conrado.
TRAGEDY
Example:
• Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare-
love story with unhappy ending
• Kuwatrong Kuwadro by Jose Victor Torres -
domestic drama about a broken family
• Les Misérables by Victor Hugo - character
seeks to redeem himself after serving 19
years in jail for stealing a loaf of bread
Comedy
COMEDY
It is a dramatic work that is
amusing and satirical in its tone,
mostly having a cheerful ending.
COMEDY
Example:
Bubble Gang

Bubble Gang is a gag show

presented using Television
play.
COMEDY
Other Examples:
• Ang Tanging Ina – the hilarious adventures of
a single mother with a dozen kids
• Pepito Manaloto – character won a lottery,
long-running comedy TV series
• Home Along Da Riles – classic parody of the
American film Home Alone
• Other stories with happy or desirable ending
Key Difference
Comedy is funny; tragedy is sad.
Comedy has a happy ending,
tragedy an unhappy one.
For example, the typical ending for
comedy is a marriage, the typical
ending for tragedy is death.
