Introduction

The importance of academic performance to most of the student population is highly

evident. For many students, academic success is a cornerstone upon which future opportunities,

personal fulfillment, career prospects, and overall well-being are built. However, it so happens

that numerous obstacles in their education prevent them from performing to their full potential.

According to the study "Factors that Contribute to Failure Causes of Academically Low

Performing Students" by (Glenda B. Damayo, 2022), in the Philippines, students struggle

academically due to low study habits and a lack of interest in studying. Low study habits involve

behaviors and practices that hinder students' ability to engage effectively with their academic

coursework. These may include procrastination, poor time management, ineffective study

techniques, and a lack of organizational skills. Such habits impede students' capacity to absorb

and retain information and undermine their overall academic performance and confidence.

Moreover, a concerning lack of interest in studying further compounds the challenges

academically low-performing students face. Motivation, curiosity, and enthusiasm are vital

components of effective learning. Nevertheless, many students need help cultivating and

sustaining these qualities in the face of academic pressures, personal distractions, and external

influences. The implications of low study habits and a lack of interest in studying extend beyond

individual students, impacting future educational outcomes and societal progress.

In a rapidly changing and increasingly competitive global landscape, acquiring knowledge,

thinking critically, and adapting to new challenges is crucial.

According to (N. C. Sirage, 2019) "Ability and self-efficacy are pivotal factors that consistently

influence Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics performance." Research indicates

that STEM students often exhibit greater independence, driven by the critical thinking and

problem-solving skills inherent in their disciplines. However, despite their proficiency and

autonomy, like all students, they too encounter periods of academic challenge and may face

instances of poor performance.

Dominican students exhibit diverse levels of academic performance, with roles as student

leaders, athletes, academic achievers, and individuals facing challenges with academic

performance. This research endeavors to help students through identifying the primary factors

that lead to poor academic performance among students.

Statement of the Problem

The study, “The Primary Factors That Lead To Poor Academic Performance Among the

STEM Students at Dominican College of Sta. Rosa”, aims to determine the primary factors that

lead to the poor academic performance of Senior High School STEM students at the Dominican

College of Sta. Rosa A. Y. 2023- 2024.

Specifically, it also also seeks to answer the following:

1. What are the primary factors that lead to poor academic performance?

1.1. Student related factors

1.2. Teacher related factors

1.3 Family related factors

1.4. Social related factors

1.5. Internet related factors

2. What action plan can be proposed to improve poor academic performance?

DOMINICAN COLLEGE OF STA. ROSA

Objectives:

This study aims to do the following:

● To identify the primary factors that lead to poor academic performance among the senior

high school students enrolled in the Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics

(STEM) track at Dominican College of Sta. Rosa.

● To investigate the role of student related, teacher related, family related, social related,

and internet related factors in shaping the academic performance of senior high school

STEM students.

● To identify strategies that can address the primary factors leading to poor academic

performance among senior high school Science, Technology, Engineering, and

Mathematics students, as perceived by the students themselves.

● To provide recommendations to Dominican College of Sta. Rosa based on the findings of

the research, aimed at improving the academic performance and overall well-being of

senior high school STEM students.

Literature Review

According to the (Asian Journal of Medicine and Health, 2023), “Unhealthy lifestyle

behaviors, including low frequency of breakfast intake, dietary ups and downs, shorter study

time, longer video game time, and irregular lifestyle, have been associated with poor academic

performance in undergraduate students.”

According to (R. A. N. Al-Tameemi, “Factors influencing poor academic

performance among urban university students in Bangladesh,” 2021), “Investigating the

factors leading to poor academic performance is important because it helps identify the

underlying causes and develop strategies to improve student outcomes. Several studies have

highlighted various factors that contribute to academic under-performance, including academic,

personal, social, and demographic factors. Understanding these factors can inform the

development of targeted interventions and support systems to address the specific needs of

students and improve their academic performance. Furthermore, investigating the interplay

between various behaviors and factors, such as physical fighting, diet/lifestyle, electronic device

usage, concurrent substance use, and violence/self-harm, can provide insights into the relative

importance of these factors on academic performance.”

According to (S. Krishnan, 2022), “Moreover, teacher-related factors, including but not

limited to ineffective teaching methodologies, disengagement from students, and a lack of

adequate support for those facing academic challenges, can significantly contribute to suboptimal

academic performance. When educators fail to employ pedagogical approaches that cater to

diverse learning styles or neglect to establish meaningful connections with their students, the

learning environment may become less conducive to academic growth.”

According to (J. B. Gurerro-Lopez, 2021), “When parents are not actively engaged in

their child's educational pursuits, whether due to work commitments, lack of awareness, or other

reasons, students may lack essential support and encouragement crucial for academic success.

Additionally, socioeconomic challenges, such as limited financial resources, inadequate access to

educational materials, or unstable housing conditions, can create barriers to learning and hinder

academic progress.”

According to (H. Mucke, 2019), “Peer pressure, arising from the desire to conform to

social norms or gain acceptance within peer groups, can steer students away from academic

pursuits or encourage behaviors that detract from learning,” In addition “Moreover, societal

expectations regarding academic success, career choices, and personal aspirations can exert

undue pressure on students, leading to stress, anxiety, and feelings of inadequacy.”

According to (I. Mauliya, 2020), “Social media notifications, online gaming, and endless

streams of content compete for students' time and cognitive resources, often leading to

fragmented attention spans and diminished focus on learning tasks. Furthermore, the vast

expanse of the internet exposes students to a variety of potentially harmful content, including

misinformation, explicit material, and cyberbullying, which can not only disrupt the learning

process but also compromise their emotional well-being and mental health.”

According to A. Mahajan (2022), “Innovative pedagogical teaching methods have been

found to have a positive impact on students' academic performance. Strategies to overcome low

performance in the early courses include implementing follow-up and applying different

strategies to meet the needs of students. The poor proficiency in mathematics among students at

the K-12 level has implications for their performance in STEM fields, and emphasizing the

fundamentals of mathematics can help improve their computational thinking skills. Evaluating

students' performance in mathematical subjects can help identify areas of weakness and provide

targeted support to improve their understanding.”

Research Limitation

This study focuses on the primary factors that lead to poor academic performance

according to the perspectives from Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics at

Dominican College of Sta. Rosa. This research investigates the various factors contributing to

the development of academic performance including the students, teacher, family, social, and

internet related factors. The study includes the discussion of the impact of poor academic

performance that can have significant effects on students. The study presents action plans and

strategies to address the identified poor academic performance and enhance the well-being and

academic performance of the Senior High School Science, Technology, Engineering, and

Mathematics Students enrolled at Dominican College of Sta. Rosa. The data collection method

will be in the form of interviews.

This research specifically targets Senior High School Science, Technology, Engineering,

and Mathematics Students from Grade 11 to Grade 12 and does not extend to other levels. This

study is limited to the students enrolled at the Dominican College of Sta. Rosa, and may not

represent the students of any other institution.
