Research Position Essay

In the United States, there has been an increasing amount of violence, specifically

violence that involves guns. One of the ways the government can combat this increase is through

the implementation of strict gun laws. Specifically, laws that have restrictions and laws that make

obtaining the weapon harder. Essentially, these laws have to discourage criminals or, at the bare

minimum, discourage violence. This research position essay argues for the implementation of

stricter gun laws in all the states inside the United States. Community-building programs and

stricter gun laws, when promoted in conjunction with one another, improve the lives of people in

less fortunate communities by decreasing the number of suicides, homicides, robberies, and

violent gun crimes.

Community-building Programs

Community-building programs have been associated with a reduced rate of homicides

and violence. Individuals who live or are based in a less fortunate/poor community experience

far more crime and gun violence. Branas, Charles C., et al., and Kwon, Eustina G., et al.

researched the benefits of community-building programs and the effects they had on the

community.
