2023 DEVELOPMENTS

Rice maintains leadership amid inflation challenges

Rice, pasta and noodles in Peru has been experiencing significant growth in unit prices,
primarily driven by rising manufacturing and distribution costs. Contributing factors include
increased commodity prices, notably for wheat due to Russia's invasion of Ukraine and lower
production in other countries owing to climatic events. In addition, logistics costs have surged,
partly due to new government regulations and a notable increase in fuel prices. These rising
costs, coupled with declining living standards and reduced incomes, have somewhat dampened
consumption.
Despite the inflationary pressures leading to a double-digit increase in prices over the last two
years, rice continues to be the preferred staple in Peru, and remains a significantly larger
segment in terms of retail volume than pasta and noodles. As a traditional element of Peruvian
cuisine, rice consumption is the highest in the region. Although there has been a recent decline
in rice consumption, falling below pre-pandemic levels, it remains an integral part of most dishes
in the country. The introduction of aged rice, boasting advantages such as higher yield, better
graining, and enhanced flavour, has revitalised the segment and sustained rice's dominant
position in Peruvian households.
Rice is crucial to Peruvian cuisine, with per capita consumption surpassing most Latin
American countries. Packaged rice, however, faces stiff competition from rice sold in loose
format, particularly outside Lima in small local grocers. The most common packaged rice
formats include 750g and 1kg sizes, popular in small grocers and supermarkets, respectively. In
the foodservice and wholesale sectors, the 50kg size is preferred for its economies of scale.

Costeño continues to lead rice

Costeño Alimentos, part of the Camil group, leads rice in Peru. The company's portfolio
includes brands like Costeño, Molino Rojo, Paisana, Hoja Redonda, and Arroz del Sur, among
others, catering to various price segments and distribution channels, including bulk sales in
market stalls and small local grocers. Recently, Costeño underwent a brand image revamp,
adding a premium touch to its packaging and products. This includes launching arborio rice,
parboiled rice, smaller packs of rice cookies, and even rice flour, aiming to bolster its market
position and become a reference in rice products.

Molitalia invests in premium pasta

Molitalia, closely trailing Alicorp's Don Vittorio in the competitive landscape, has recently
invested in a new production line for premium pasta. This technological advancement is
expected not only to increase production capacity but also to enhance product quality,
potentially attracting new clients and improving market share in the segment.
In 2023, pasta consumption continues to decline, attributed to the segment's maturity and
near-universal home penetration. Pasta's popularity in Peru is underpinned by its affordability,
diverse brand offerings, and its role as a filling side dish to protein in meals. For many,
particularly in low-income households, pasta compensates for limited or absent protein sources
in their diet.

PROSPECTS AND OPPORTUNITIES

Rising prices of rice due to climatic conditions

The forecast period is expected to see an increase in the price of rice in Peru, primarily due to
the impact of the Global El Niño Phenomenon on rice crops. Adverse weather conditions, such
as high temperatures, excessive rainfall in some regions, and drought in others, are anticipated
to result in lower crop productivity, subsequently driving up rice prices. Given rice's essential
role in Peruvian cuisine, consumption is likely to persist, but there may be a shift towards more
affordable brands or even the informal sector, which already holds a significant market share.
In response to health concerns, the Peruvian Ministry of Health (Minsa) is promoting the mass
consumption of fortified rice. This initiative aims to prevent and control maternal and child
anaemia and chronic child malnutrition. The fortification process involves mixing white rice with
grains fortified with essential vitamins and minerals, using warm or hot extrusion technology.
This government-led initiative is expected to enhance the nutritional status and overall health of
the population, especially children and women of childbearing age.

Pasta poised for growth with health-focused innovations

Pasta is projected to experience more significant growth than rice or noodles over the forecast
period. The introduction of new pasta varieties, including whole wheat, low-glycaemic, gluten-
free, and those made with local ingredients, is expected to rejuvenate pasta. These health-
oriented products, developed by mainstream brands like Santa Catalina, which offers pasta with
quinoa and oats, are set to become more affordable and accessible, appealing to a health-
conscious consumer base.
Chilled pasta is anticipated to see the strongest growth within this sector. Available in
supermarkets, hypermarkets, and gourmet stores, chilled pasta, especially ravioli filled with
cheese, meat, or vegetables like mushrooms, is increasingly popular. Its consumption is
typically associated with special occasions and family dinners, a trend that emerged during the
pandemic when dining out was restricted.

Costeño and alicorp to maintain market leadership

Costeño and Alicorp are expected to maintain their lead in rice, pasta and noodles in Peru.
Alicorp’s success is attributed to its extensive product portfolio, covering a broad price range,
high marketing investment, and widespread distribution across the country. Alicorp has
demonstrated agility in adapting to market changes, such as by slightly reducing pasta package
sizes to mitigate price increases for consumers.
Instant noodles, which saw significant growth during the pandemic due to its products’
convenience, low cost, and ease of storage, is predicted to experience a slight slowdown in

volume sales from 2025 onwards. This expected contraction is largely due to the high
penetration of these products in Peruvian households, particularly among low- and middle-
income families.
