BUILDING SERVICES 2
TOPIC 1:
AIR-CONDITIONING AND MECHANICAL VENTILATION
(ACMV) SYSTEM
TODAY’S LEARNING OUTCOMES
At the end of this session, students must be able to:

1.1 Apply knowledge of air-conditioning and mechanical ventilation (ACMV)

system into design-based task (people habitat/ community building):
1.1.5 Identify appropriate types of ACMV system in a building
1.1.6 Construct diagram of ACMV system in a building with appropriate label
and explanation
CONTENT OF TODAY’S LECTURE
1. Spatial planning and zoning
2. Space requirement for ACMV system
Spatial planning and zoning
Selection of ACMV system is based on the room size, room volume and room
function.
These criteria determine the cooling load.
The cooling load determines the appropriate types of ACMV system.
A ducted cooling systems are zoned to
enable you to select the area of the
home or office that is to be air
conditioned. A typical layout may be:
• Zone 1: Dining and Living Room
• Zone 2: Bedroom
• Zone 3: Kitchen and Family Room
• Zone 4: Bedroom

Different rooms can be cooled as

required, unoccupied areas that are
zoned can be turned off to minimize
operating costs.
