this song was written by Louis MacNeice who was a prolific writer and
poet during his time. The setting of Cradle song began in America but
not finished – however on Britten’s return it was completed relatively
quickly. The Eleanor of the title is the name of the woman MacNeice left
behind to return to England and the war.
