All spiders spin webs. That's because webs help spiders. Webs help spiders do three things. Webs help spiders

spiders like to lay their eggs in their webs. The webs help keep the eggs together. Webs help spiders keep their
eggs safe. Webs help spiders hide. Most spiders are dark. They are brown, grey, or black. But spider webs are
light. They are white and cloudy. When spiders hide in their webs, they are harder to see. Webs help spiders
catch food. Spider webs are sticky. When a bug flies into the web, it gets stuck. It moves around. It tries to get
out. But it can't. It is trapped! Spiders can tell that the bug is stuck. That's because spiders feel the web move.
And the spider is hungry. The spider goes to get the bug. As you can see, webs help spiders hold eggs. Webs

Aunt Casey

‘Hey, Addo‚ look what I found‚’ she said‚ pulling a key from one of her many pockets. I didn’t ask her where
she ‘found’ it. It was better that I didn’t know. ‘Do you want to take out a rowing boat?’ she asked. But a
question from Aunt Casey was not a question: it was a suggestion that was always going to be enacted. She
knew it‚ and so did I. It was her enthusiasm that made her impossible to resist; it infected all those around
her‚ especially me. ‘I know we are only supposed to be strolling along the river …’She had unlocked the shed
and single-handedly pulled a boat down to the sandy bank before she had finished her sentence ‘… but I
thought it was high time my favorite nephew and I had a bit of fun!’ ‘Are you sure? After last time ?” But my
attempt to put the brakes on this was purely token. I was already in the boat when I questioned her. There was
nothing better than hanging out with Aunt Casey‚ even if it always meant me putting my life in danger‚ perhaps
because it meant me putting my life in danger. ‘Shouldn’t we have life-jackets?’ But she had pushed us off.
Jumping into the boat‚ the bottom of her trousers sopping wet‚ she dismissed my arguments with a wave of her
hand. She stood at the back of the boat‚ feet apart‚ rocking from side to side. She wasn’t trying to scare me; she
was trying to scare herself. My emotions were secondary. ‘Let’s head for the other bank‚ ’she said throwing her
arm in the direction of an old twisted tree‚ her momentum almost tipping us out of the boat. ‘Be a darling and
row for me. A strong‚ young lad like you should be able to row there in no time. ’It was at this point that I
realized there were no oars in the boat. And when I pointed this out to Aunt Casey‚ all she could do was laugh.

blueberries can grow on one bush. At first, the blueberries are green. The green berries are not ready to eat yet.
They need a lot of sun and rain to help them become fat and sweet. When the berries turn blue, they are ripe and
ready to be picked. Some farmers grow blueberries in big fields. The people who live nearby can earn money by
helping to pick the blueberries. Each one takes a pail out to the field and fills it with blueberries. They work fast
so that they can fill many pails. They want to earn as much money as they can. When they are done picking,
their fingers are blue from the juice of the berries! After the blueberries are picked, they are put into boxes and
sent to stores. People buy the blueberries and take them home to eat. Some people like to wash the berries and
eat them one by one. Other people like to cook with blueberries. They make blueberry muffins and pancakes.
No matter how you eat them, blueberries taste great!

Outer Space

From far out in space, Earth looks like a blue ball. Since water covers three-fourths of the Earth’s surface, blue
is the color we see most. The continents look brown, like small islands floating in the huge, blue sea. White
clouds wrap around the Earth like a light blanket. The Earth is shaped like a sphere, or a ball. It is 25,000 miles
around! It would take more than a year to walk around the whole planet. A spaceship can fly around the widest
part of the sphere in only 90 minutes.
Even though spaceships have traveled to the Moon, people cannot visit the Moon without special suits. The
Moon has no air or water. Plants and animals can’t live there either. Astronauts first landed on the Moon in
A969. After that, there were six more trips to the Moon. They brought back Moon rocks, which scientists are
still studying. There are holes, or craters, all over the Moon’s surface. Scientists believe that meteorites smashed
into the Moon millions of years ago and formed the craters. The Sun is the closest star to Earth. A star is a hot
ball of burning gas. The Sun looks very big because it is so close. But the Sun is just a medium-sized star.
Billions of far-away stars are much bigger than our Sun. The burning gases from the Sun are so hot that they
warm the Earth from 93 million miles away! Even though the Sun is always glowing, the night here on Earth is
dark. That’s because the Earth rotates, or turns around, every 24 hours. During the day, the Earth faces the Sun.
Then we see light. During the night, the Earth turns away from the Sun. Then it faces the darkness of space.
652. Each day we learn more about the Earth, the Moon, and the Sun. Why is blue the color we see most
when looking at Earth from outer space?
A.Because most of the Earth is covered in land.
B.Because the Sun’s rays make the Earth look blue.
C.Because most of the Earth is covered in water.
D.Because clouds wrap around the Earth.
653. Read this sentence from the story.Scientists believe that meteorites smashed into the Moon millions of
years ago and formed the craters. What does “formed” mean?
A.hit
B. made
C.broke
D.stopped

654. What causes daylight on Earth?
A.The full Moon causes daylight.
B.Daylight is caused by the Earth facing away from the Sun.
C.The heat of the Sun’s rays causes daylight.
D.Daylight is caused by the Earth facing toward the Sun.
655. Which of the following sentences BEST describes the Sun?
A. The Sun looks small because it is so far from Earth.
B.The Sun is a ball of burning gases that gives the Earth heat and light.
C.The Sun is a small star.
D.The Sun is not as hot as it looks.
656. Why did the astronauts bring rocks back from the Moon?
A.Because they didn’t know if they would return to the Moon ever again.
B.Because they wanted to prove that they went to the Moon.
C.Because they wanted to remember how the Moon looked.
D.Because they wanted to study them and learn more about the Moon.

Amazing black holes

How many things can you see in the night sky? A lot! On a clear night you might see the Moon, some planets,
and thousands of sparkling stars. You can see even more with a telescope. You might see stars where before you
only saw dark space. You might see that many stars look larger than others. You might see that some stars that
look white are really red or blue. With bigger and bigger telescopes you can see more and more objects in the
sky. And you can see those objects in more and more detail. But scientists believe there are some things in the
sky that we will never see. We won't see them with the biggest telescope in the world, on the clearest night of
the year. That's because they're invisible. They're the mysterious dead stars called black holes. You might find it
hard to imagine that stars die. After all, our Sun is a star. Year after year we see it up in the sky, burning
brightly, giving us heat and light. The Sun certainly doesn't seem to be getting old or weak. But stars do burn
out and die after billions of years. As a star's gases burn, they give off light and heat. But when the gas runs out,
the star stops burning and begins to die. As the star cools, the outer layers of the star pull in toward the center.
The star squashes into a smaller and smaller ball. If the star was very small, the star ends up as a cold, dark ball
called a black dwarf. If the star was very big, it keeps squashing inward until it's packed together tighter than
anything in the universe. Imagine if the Earth were crushed until it was the size of a tiny marble. That's how
tightly this dead star, a black hole, is packed. What pulls the star in toward its center with such power? It's the
same force that pulls you down when you jump — the force called gravity. A black hole is so tightly packed
that its gravity sucks in everything — even light. The light from a black hole can never come back to your eyes.
That's why you see nothing but blackness. So the next time you stare up at the night sky, remember: there's
more in the sky than meets the eye! Scattered in the silent darkness are black holes — the great mystery of
space.
657. According to the article, what causes a star to die?
A. As its gases run out, it cools down.
B. It collides with other stars.
C. It can only live for about a million years.
D.As it gets hotter and hotter, it explodes.
658. Read this sentence from the story. The Sun certainly doesn't seem to be getting old or weak. What is an
antonym for the word weak?
A.thin B.tired C.strong D.big

All things are linked

Once in a certain village there was a chief who had many slaves. When he wanted something done, he just
ordered his slaves to do it. If he wanted a good and wise thing done, his advisors said to him, “Yes that is
good.” If he wanted something done which was not wise, these advisors said just the same, “That is good.” But
the chief’s lowest advisor never said yes or no. When the chief asked him about something, he always thought
for a while, and then replied, “All things are linked.” For example, the chief once asked him when the long dry
season would end, and he simply replied, “All things are linked.” Another time the chief asked why the corn
crop was so small and again he replied “All things are linked”.
One time it happened that the chief could not sleep because of the loud croaking of the frogs at night in the
marshes. For many nights he could not sleep, and he finally decided to kill all the frogs. He told his advisors
about his plan. As usual, they praised him and said, “Yes, that is good.” But the lowest advisor did not speak.
The next day the chief sent his slaves to kill the frogs in the marsh. The slaves killed frogs until no
frogs remained. The chief slept well that night. He was very pleased with his life.
But soon the mosquitoes began to multiply in the marsh because there were no frogs left to eat the young
mosquitoes. They entered the house of the chief and bit him. The chief’s life became miserable.
All the villagers suffered. So the chief sent his slaves to kill the mosquitoes. The slaves tried, but there were too
many mosquitoes.
Life in the village became impossible because of the many mosquitoes. People went away and left their fields
and houses. The old village was empty except for the chief’s family. Finally, the chief and his family also went
away.
And now there is a saying in that country: “’Yes , that is good’ caused a whole village to become empty.”

Packaging the environment

In the last 50 years there has been a revolution in the nature of packaging, particularly the wrapping of
foodstuffs, which constitutes over 60 % of packaging. There are many reasons for this growth-some economic,
some sociological. Goods are transported across the world, which means more packaging for transportation.
People go shopping less often because of considerable increases in car and fridge ownership, which means that
food can be bought in bulk. Seventy % of homes have freezers and 40% have microwaves, which has led to an
increase in frozen foods and ready prepared meals. Both of these have introduced specialized packaging.
Clearly some packaging is necessary. It protects food and should provide useful product information so we can

35
make right choice. It can also prolong the life of a product. However, there are other reasons for packaging that
are more for company profit than the interests of the customer.

The Future: What will it be like?
Nobody knows how the world will look in the future. Some say that the progress in science and technology
will make life more comfortable. Machines will do the hard work for people. There will be special robots for
everybody. People will program them according to their needs. Mothers will use them in the kitchen for
washing dishes and clothes. Fathers will use them in the garage and the garden. Children will play different
games with them. This way people will have more free time. They will have enough time to do many social,
cultural and sporting activities. Or some will stay home and watch television.
Others say that the earth will be very crowded with about seven thousand million people. There will be big
metropolises. Scientists are certain that problems like population growth and urbanization will continue to
annoy people.
As a solution, maybe one day, people from our planet will have to live in space.
People are very interested in the future because they are sure that it will be very different from the past. For
thousands of years the lives of human beings did not change much. The ties among family members were so

36
strong that the son did the same job as the father. It was a family tradition. Now there are jobs which did not
exist in the past. Computer and nuclear engineering are only two among many new professions.
Today people are fed up with the problems of energy and pollution. They do not want to face the same
problems in the future. At the moment we use mainly coal fuel and electric energy to heat our houses, to
transport people, and to produce food. But we also know that their supply is very limited. And their waste
products are poisoning our atmosphere, rivers and oceans. So scientist should work out new projects related to
the use of available energy.

740. According to the text, as a result of overpopulation, maybe in the future people ……………. .
A. will need birth-control
B. will program themselves according to their needs
C. will have to live in a space

April Fool’s day
April 1st, or April Fool’s Day, is the day when people play jokes with each other. April Fool’s Day started in the
sixteenth century in Europe. Before that time, New Year’s Day was celebrated on April 1 st. Then a new calendar
was introduced called the Gregorian calendar. January 1st became the first day of the year, but many people did
not know about it. So those who continued to celebrate New Year’s Day on April 1 st were called fools.
Nowadays we play jokes on people on April 1 st. For example, someone might put salt in the sugar container so
another person could “accidentally” put it in their coffee. Or someone might change the time on another
person’s alarm clock so that person would unknowingly wake up earlier or later than planned. Or maybe a
person would tell a lie to make someone else shocked. After we play the trick, we say “April Fool”. It is
generally done in the spirit of fun and doesn’t cause any real harm to anyone. Do you have any great jokes to
play on anyone today? April fool’s day is celebrated many countries around the world. Try it out.

The population of an area is the total number of people who live there. For many years, the world
population has been growing rapidly. In 1981, the world population was about, 4,490,000,000 (four billion,
four hundred and ninety million). The number of people have grown by about 79 million since 1980. This was
an increase of 1,8 percent. In the thirty seconds that you might have used to read the above paragraph about one
hundred and fifteen babies were born. Probably about forty-five people died during the same thirty seconds.
This means that one hundred and forty are added to the world population every minute. If the population
were distributed evenly throughout the world, there would be about thirty persons per square kilometer of land.
However, people aren’t distributed evenly. No one lives in most of Antarctica or in parts of some deserts. In
other parts of the world, there are as many as four hundred persons per square kilometer. The average number
of persons living within an area is the population density. The greatest population density is in Europe and

Urashima, the Fisher

A long time ago, on the coast of Japan, there lived a family of fisher folk named Kuzumi. The youngest boy
called Urаshima. He was a kind boy and a clever fisherman.
One day he went out in his boat and threw out his line. He didn’t catch any fish-instead he caught a great
tortoise. It had a large hard shell, a funny wrinkled old man face and a tiny tail. Now, although its face looked
old, this tortoise was only a youngster. Urashima, too, knew that the tortoise was no older than he; and he also
knew that Japanese tortoises lived for a thousand years. So, he thought to himself,” Why should I kill it, when
there are plenty of fish for me to eat? After all, it’s got about another nine hundred and eighty eight years to live
yet. It would be cruel to kill it now.’ So Urаshima threw the tortoise back into the sea and went on fishing.
After he made his catch he felt drowsy. So he lay down in his boat in the hot summer sun and went off to sleep.
As he slept a beautiful girl came up from beneath the waves. She climbed into the boat and woke Urashima with
a touch of her hand. He stared at her still dazed with sleep. “I’m the daughter of the Sea God,” she said, “and I
live in the Dragon Palace beyond the sea, I was the tortoise you threw back, for my father sent me in disguise to
see what you would do. Now, my father has sent for you. If you learn to love me we shall be married and live in
happiness for a thousand years in the Dragon Palace.’

Tiny invaders
The human body is truly amazing. It allows us to sense the world around us, to do work and have fun, and to
move from place to place. In fact, the human body does its work so well that most people don’t think about it
very much –until they get sick. The germs that make people sick are everywhere. You can’t see them, but
they’re there. They’re sitting on your desk. They’re hiding on your computer’s keyboard. They’re even in the
air that you are breathing. There are two types of germs: viruses and bacteria. Viruses use the cells inside
animals or plants to live and multiply. Viruses cause illnesses such as influenza, or the flu. Bacteria are tiny
creatures. Some bacteria are good. They can cause sore throats and ear infections. How can you stop these tiny
invaders from making you sick? Your skin is the first defense against germs. One of the easiest ways to prevent
some illnesses is simply by washing with soap and water. But germs can still enter the body through small cuts
in the skin or through the mouth, eyes, and nose. Once germs are inside your body, your immune system tries to
protect you. It looks for and destroys germs. How does it do that? Some cells in the body actually eat germs!
Other cells make antibodies. There is a different antibody for each kind of germs. Some antibodies keep germs
from making you sick. Others help your body find and kill germs. After a germ is destroyed, the antibodies stay
in your body. They protect you if the same kind of germ comes back. That way you will not get the same illness
twice.
You can also help your immune system to fight germs by getting vaccinated. Vaccines are medicines. They
contain dead or weak germs that cannot make antibodies attack it. You can also keep your body healthy by
eating a healthy diet to make your immune system strong.

A slice of history
What do you like on your pizza? Cheese? Tomatoes? Sausage?
People may disagree on their favorite ingredients, but many people agree that pizza is a favorite food. Where
and when did people start making pizza? To find out, we have to travel back in time.
Thousands of years ago, people used ancient types of wheat and other grains to make flat bread on the hot rock
of their campfires. At some point in time, early cooks started putting other kinds of food on the bread – using
the bread as a plate. It was the world’s first pizza crust!
Over time, pizza began to look more like the food we know today. When European explorers arrived in the
Americas, they saw Native American people eating tomatoes. When they brought tomatoes back to Europe,
however, people there wouldn’t eat them. They thought eating tomatoes could make them ill.
Slowly, however, Europeans discovered that tomatoes were delicious and safe to eat. Cooks in Naples, an
Italian city, began putting tomatoes on their flat bread. The world’s first true pizza shop opened in Naples in
1830. People there ate pizza for lunch and dinner. They even ate it for breakfast!
In the late 1800s, many Italians moved to the United States. They brought pizza with them. The first American
pizzeria, or pizza restaurant, was Lombardi’s in New York City. It opened its doors in 1905. Now pizza is one
of the three most popular foods in the USA, but Americans are not the only pizza lovers.
People now eat around five billion pizzas a year, and everyone has their favorite kind. Brazilians love green
peas on their pizza. Russians like fish and onions. People in India use lamb and tofu. The Japanese think
seafood on pizza is good. Some pizzas truly sound strange, yet all of them share two things. Each begins with

The United Kingdom
There are several names for Britain. The official name is the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern
Ireland. However, people call it the United Kingdom, the UK, Great Britain, Britain or England. In fact,
England is only one of the four parts of the UK.
England is the biggest and richest part of the UK .The capital city is London. Two thousand years ago the Celts
lived in the whole of Britain, but in about AD 400 tribes from Germany, called the Anglo-Saxons invaded.
‘England’ means ‘Angle-Land’. The Anglo-Saxons pushed the Celts into Wales, Scotland and Ireland.
Scotland is the second biggest part of the UK. Until the seventeenth century, it was an independent country. In
1603, however, the English queen, Elizabeth I, died. She had no children. Her nearest relative was her cousin,
James, the king of Scotland. James became a king of England, too, and from that time England and Scotland
have had from the same king and queen. In 1707, the Scots gave up their own parliament, but in 1999 they got a
new parliament in Edinburgh.
Until the thirteenth century, Wales had its own prince, but the English king, Edward I, defeated the last prince,
Llewelyn. Since then the eldest son of the English king or queen has been the Prince of Wales. A lot of people
in Wales speak Welsh as their first language. Schools in Wales can teach in Welsh or English. All public signs
in Wales must be in Welsh and English. In 1999 Wales got its own small parliament in Cardiff.
In the sixteenth century, England, Scotland and Wales became Protestant countries. Ireland, however, remained
Catholic. Elizabeth I sent Protestants to live there. Most of these Protestants came from Scotland and they went
to Ulster, the north-eastern corner of Ireland. The Irish were not happy in the United Kingdom. Finally, in the
1920s most of Ireland became independent. The Protestants in the north, however, decided to stay in the United
Kingdom. There has been a lot of trouble in Northern Ireland in recent years, because the Catholics in Northern
Ireland want to be part of the Republic, but the Protestants want to be part of the UK.
926. The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland consists of
A.England, Scotland and Wales. C.England and Scotland.
B.England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. D.Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland
927. Which of these statements is true?

Community center
I am Virginia Bell, the founder of Rockjoy Shelter. The organization was established in 1963 by members of the
community working together with the local council. At that time, we weren’t a shelter, but a small soup kitchen
that offered hot meals to homeless people.
The town hall was the building we used initially. Then, the local council moved us to an abandoned warehouse,
which was ideal since it was larger and allowed us to take in more people. Eventually, we raised enough money
to purchase our own building, which was previously a hotel. In order to launch our campaign, the local council
gave us a small grant. But since then, we have had to rely on the generosity of local people. We also have a
charity shop on the high street that generates a small amount of income.
Our shelter does not exclude anyone, although one area is reserved for women only. Most of our residents are
parents with children, so there is a children’s centre as well.

51
It’s open to children of all ages and offers classes in Maths and English. It’s much like a conventional school;
however, instead of having the same curriculum for all students, each child decides on their own study plan and
works to achieve individual goals.
We are unable to offer financial assistance to our residents and instead concentrate on providing them with the
skills to live independently. To do this, we offer a variety of courses. These are designed to develop essential
skills for the workplace.
We are always looking for volunteers! A mandatory training session is provided for all volunteers, and those
under eighteen must seek consent from a parent or guardian before training begins.

GM Food

It is hard to be a farmer. Cold weather can kill your crops. Bugs can eat your crops. Weeds can hurt your crops.
Your crops may need more rain than they get. Fruits and Vegetables can go bad before they are sold. Some
people say farmers can fix all of this with GM food.

change the DNA that tells food how to grow. When people change the DNA of food, it is called GM food.

Canada's Tallest Tree

A man named Randy liked to hunt trees. He looked for big trees and old trees. He made maps to show where
these trees were. He did not want to cut them down. He wanted people to take care of them.
Randy was told of a very tall tree on Vancouver Island. The tree was said to be 314 feet tall. That would make it
the tallest tree in Canada. Randy set out to find the tree.
But someone else found it first. It was found by a logger. Loggers wanted to cut down Canada’s tallest tree and
all the trees around it.
Randy made a path in the forest so people could see the tall tree. The tree was so big and beautiful it would fill
