Bearing Pedestal Head Tank Inspection & Cleaning Internal head tank on the bearing pedestal is basically equipped since MET-SC series, There were cases recently that sludge on the inner surface of head tank when the lube oil for turbocharger is commonly used for 4-cycle engine. The head tank is a passageway to lubricate the turbocharger bearing. If the deposit dries and separates from the wall and accumulates inside the tank, it may clog the lube oll passage way to the bearing and abrade the bearing consequently. Therefore, it is recommended that the head tank be inspected internally when the turbocharger is, overhauled at the time of docking work. 1. General 1.1. Function of head tank ‘The head tank builtin the turbocharger prevents the seizure of rotor and bearing when the lubrication stops suddenly caused by the black out onboard. Also, there are three passageways to the head tank and Fig.1 shows each function. Caution in checking Since the head tank is the passageway to the bearing of turbocharger, be careful not to allow the dust and foreign materials such as sludge enter the oil passage way when removing and fitting the cover and at the time of internal checking. Especially, when other job is performed near the head tank and when it is anticipated that dusts enter into the head tank, please take utmost care. Procedure of Head Tank Inspection and Cleaning 2.1 Removal of head tank cover Fig. 2 and Fig. 3 show the procedure of removing the head tank cover. There are two (2) types of cover; original type and the type with flap valve. ‘The procedure of removing the cover is the same. (1) Dismantle the oil supply tube on the head tank cover. Cover all the flanges of oil supply tube and oll supply tube fitting seat face of the head tank with clean vinyl sheet or attach gummed cloth tape Dismantie the head tank cover and cover it with clean cloth or viny! sheet. Take care not to allow dusts entering into the head tank while removing the cover. When there is no sludge (1) Check if there are foreign materials, dusts, etc. on the bottom of the head tank, (2) If dusts are collected at the bottom, clean the tank as indicated i] item 2.2.2. (3). Ifitis judged not necessary to clean, restore the head tank cover as indicated in item 2.3, 2.2.2 When there is sludge Fig. 4 shows the relative location of oil passage way in the head tank and the bearing lubricator. (1) Wipe off the residual oil collected at the bottom of the tank with clean sponge, (Note) Do not remove the pipe and bush. (2) Wipe off the deposits on the tank inner surface and the bottom. a) First, wipe off with a sponge containing cleaning oil If the sludge is severe, scrape the sludge off with a spatula on the inner surface of the tank. b) Lastly wipe off with clean and dry sponge. (Note) The head tank surface is applied with oil proof paint. Be careful not to spoil the paint. Also, in wiping off the dusts and sludge inside the head tank with waste cloth, be careful not to leave the ravels, (3) Air blow the oil passageway in the following sequence and clean. ‘Sequence of cleaning (Refer to Fig. 4) B+D>Q+9-85@ Repeat the above sequence three times and more for air blowing (4) Clean the inside of tank removing the dust, sludge and residue with clean sponge (with cleaning oil) or clean bare hands and check carefully. 2.3 Head Tank Cover Fitting Procedure Fig.2 and Fig.3 show the head tank cover fitting procedure. The procedure is common to original type and the tank with flap valve. (1) Check and make sure that there is no foreign substance on the flange surface of the head tank. (2) Check and make sure that there is no foreign substance on the head tank cover (with packing) (3) Fit the head tank cover (with packing) (4) Attach the oil supply tube. (Note) Replace the packing with new one if it is wor. In such case, adhere the packing and the cover with seal bond. Do not apply the seal bond between the head tank flange face and the packing.
