QUESTION 1 (Start on a new page)

Various options are provided as possible answers to the following questions. Choose the answer
and write only the letter (A-D) next to the question numbers (1.1 to 1.5) in the ANSWER BOOK,
e.g. 1.11 E. Each question has only ONE correct answer.

1.1 Which ONE of the following is an AMPHOLYTE?

A H3O+

B HCO_3

C H3PO4

D NH4+ (2)

1.2 Which ONE of the following solutions has the LOWEST pH?

A 100 cm3 of a 0,2 molꞏdm-3 H2SO4

B 100 cm3 of a 0,2 molꞏdm-3 CH3COOH

C 100 cm3 of a 0,2 molꞏdm-3 HCl

D 100 cm3 of a 0,2 molꞏdm-3 (COOH)2 (2)

1.3 A chemistry educator adds enough base to a solution to cause the pH to increase from
8,5 to 9,5.

A [OH-] increases by a factor of 10.

B [H3O+] increases by a factor of 10.

C [OH-] increases by a factor of 1 molꞏdm-3.

D [H3O+] increases by a factor of 1 molꞏdm-3. (2)

QUESTION 2 (Start on a new page)

80 cm3 of a strong diprotic acid(X) of unknown concentration is mixed with 80 cm 3 of

hydrochloric acid solution of concentration 0,2 molꞏdm-3. The solution is then titrated with a
sodium hydroxide solution of concentration 0,24 molꞏdm-3. 100 cm3 of the sodium hydroxide
solution is required to exactly neutralize the acid mixture.

2.1 Define the term strong acid. (2)

2.2 Explain what is meant by a diprotic acid. (1)

2.3 Classify sodium hydroxide as a STRONG BASE or a WEAK BASE. Explain the answer. (2)

2.4 Briefly explain why sodium hydroxide is regarded as an Arrhenius base. (2)

2.5 Determine the concentration of the diprotic acid. (9)
