QUESTION 2 (Start on a new page)

1 g of pure CaCO3 reacts completely with 36 cm3 hydrochloric acid solution. The excess
hydrochloric acids neutralizes exactly 25 cm3 of a solution of sodium hydroxide. 10 cm3 of the
same solution of sodium hydroxide neutralizes 8,0 cm3 of the original hydrochloric acid.

2.1 Define the term base according to Lawry-Bronsted theory. (2)

2.2 Classify CaCO3 as a WEAK BASE or a STRONG BASE. (1)

2.3 Provide a reason as to why hydrochloric acid is regarded as a strong acid. (2)

2.4 Write down the balanced chemical equation for the:

2.4.1 Reaction between sodium hydroxide and hydrochloric acid. (3)

2.4.2 Reaction between CaCO3 and hydrochloric acid. (3)

2.5 Show, by means of suitable calculations, that [HCl] = 1,25 molꞏdm-3 and (10)
[NaOH] = 1 molꞏdm-3 .
