Results from the DORA survey

A total of 81 responses were received to the survey although not all participants completed all
questions. This document contains a summary of the results of the survey.

The majority of the respondents knew that DORA is a research repository for collating research
outputs. A few comments indicated some misunderstanding as to the purpose and processes in and
around DORA and its usage. In particular the conception that it is solely for the REF. One
commented mentioned the storage of grey literature within DORA. It was also noted that its
intention was in increase external exposure and citations

There were only 3 comments to this question mentioning other types of documents included in
DORA and problems with submitting inputs.

5. If no (Q4), what might encourage you to deposit?


The responses focussed around several common topics with include an improved or automated
submission process and clarification about the purpose and content of DORA. Some also indicated a
need to training and clear instructions as to the use of DORA. There was one comment about
copyright issues which is referred to in more detail in later questions

Most of the responses indicated that respondents predominantly list there outputs on individual
webpages with a few using group webpages. A number mentioned difficulties and limitations of the
DMU website with respect to this. A smaller number of respondents list outputs on departmental or
similar webpages.

The response to the other box on this question was mixed with a number of respondents updating
on an ad hoc or irregular basis. Some indicated difficulties with updating for a variety of reasons and
others indicated that they should update more often than they do.

9. Whose responsibility is it to update the information on the webpage(s) specified in Q6?


The majority of respondents thought that they were responsible for updating the relevant
webpages. Others were not sure or indicated a member of admin staff or webmaster in faculty was
responsible. Others indicated difficulties in carryout updates and the slowness of the process in
some cases.

A number of other databases were listed, although only 25 responses were obtained in total. These
included academic.edu, personal websites, sites of professional bodies relevant to respondent’s
subjects and other international databases (not always specifying which ones).

One response wished to deposit everything! Other suggestions were flash applications, websites,
sound and vision, movies and written documents of a variety of sorts.

A small number of specific websites were listed including on-line journals and publishers’ websites.
A couple of replies stated DORA and other DMU websites. Personal websites were also given as
responses.

20. In what ways could DORA be improved to make you happier with the way your work is
displayed (if relevant)?
The responses to this question were varied. Some mentioned the appearance of DORA and
indicated that it needed improvements and also any images displayed should be copyrighted in
some way. Others indicated the personal webpages etc were easier to use – indicating that they
would not use DORA. Also a longer time period of outputs should be included and the ability to link
to endnote would be helpful

21. What additional information fields/options you like to see in DORA that would help you to
describe your work more effectively?
A small number of responses were obtained and the main theme was the ability to link to websites
and databases external to DORA
