What is Simple
Future Tense?
A verb tense that is used to describe
and talk about things or events that
haven’t happened or will happen in
the near future.
Usage of the Simple
Future Tense
To talk about future actions we can't influence
or control
To predict or foretell future actions
To express hopes, expectations, fears, offers,
promises, refusals
How to form the Simple
Future Tense?
The formula for Simple Future Tense:
will + root form of the verb (used for general
statement, as in normal conversation)
shall + root form of the verb (used for formal,
legal writing or in a more respectful
conversation)
the verb am/is/are + going to + root form of the
verb (this is used for more casual conversation
or speech)

How do you make the Simple
Future Tense Negative?
To make the simple future tense negative, you would just
need to add the verb "not" to the formula given before.
Such as:
will + not + (root form of verb)
shall + not + (root form of the verb)
the verb am/is/are + not + going to + (root form of the
verb)

Example:
1. I will not tolerate any late submissions.
2. The landlord shall not have to repair damage done by
the renter.
3. I am not going to walk to school today.
How to ask a question in
Simple Future Tense?
You could also make a statement using Simple Future
Tense as a question.
will + (subject) + (root form of the verb)
(question word) + will + (subject) + (root form of verb)
"will" + (subject) + (root form of verb) + choice A + or +
choice B

Example:
1. Will we celebrate our anniversary by flying to New
York?
2. How will we celebrate our anniversary in New York?

Continuous Tense?

The future continuous tense is a verb tense that


shows an action happening over a period of time
in the future.
How to form Future Continuous Tense?
The common form of Future Continuous is the use of auxiliary verbs (will + be) followed by
present participle of verb (-ing)

How to form Future Continuous Tense?
Negative future continuous tense is formed with the word will + not + be
+ present participle of verb (-ing)

How to form Future Continuous Tense?
When using the future continuous tense in a question, the subject comes after
"will" and before "be".

How to form Future Continuous
Tense?
Not all verbs can be added with ( -ing) to portray Future
Continuous form.

When to use future continuous tense:

Future continuous tense is used when describing


multiple actions that are happening in the future. It's also
used to describe, planned or confirmed future events
taking place at a specific time. The future continuous
tense also shows more certainty for actions we know will
happen.

Example:
Future continuous (certain): "They will be promoting me
to a manager on Friday".

Function 1:

To describe actions happening during a given time in the


future.

Example:
1. We will be watching horror movies from dusk until dawn.
2. At 2 p.m Thursday afternoon, we will be giving a
presentation in Grammar class.

To describe multiple actions happening at the same time in the


future.

When more than one action is happening in the future and at


least one action is ongoing.

Example:
1. I will be playing basketball, on Sunday, and my partner will be
playing tennis.
2. My brother will be babysitting while I’m at work.

Continuous Tense:
Function 3:

To describe a future action interrupted by another action.

In a situation involving multiple future actions and one action


interrupting another. The first (long) action is interrupted by
the second (short) action.
The construction is often used with a subordinate clause
beginning with "when".

Example :

1. I will be sleeping when my father comes home.


2. I will be taking a shower when the guests arrive".

Function 4:

To describe likely hypothetical situations in the future.

All future events are hypothetical use future continuous tense for
hypothetical events that seem likely or that you want to seem likely

Example :

1. We will be driving hover cars any day now.

When not to use future
continuous tense:
You cannot use the future continuous tense with
stative verbs like "want", "need", "love", "hate",
"think", and "understand". They cannot be used in
continuous (be + -ing) construction.

Example:
Future continuous tense (incorrect): I will be
needing help with the repairs tomorrow.
Simple future tense (correct): I will need help with
the repairs tomorrow.

Be aware that in speech and writing (particularly
informal writing), it is common for will to be
shortened to 'll. This is especially common when
will follows a personal pronoun (e.g. I, he, she).

(This is not as common as the others.)
