GSL:

Greetings Delegates! We, the delegates of New Zealand would like to present a GSL on the agenda
“Deliberating on deescalating the red sea war with special emphasis on marine routes.” On 26
November 2023 Houthi forces tried to seize an Israeli-affiliated ship near the coast of Yemen. On 3
December 2023 Carney and civilian-owned commercial ships were attacked in international waters
in the southern Red Sea, with anti-ship ballistic missiles fired from Yemen by Iranian-backed Houthi
rebels. Houthis have attacked more than 40 commercial ships, saying they were going to help Israel
in the Israeli-Palestinian war but it's not the real intention behind it. Our government has sent a
defence team to the Middle East to join an international alliance against Houthi militants targeting
civilian ships in the Red Sea. Our Prime Minister Respected Christopher Luxon said the Houthis’
attacks against commercial and naval shipping were “illegal, unacceptable and profoundly
destabilizing”, arguing that the defence deployment was a continuation of the country’s “long
history of defending freedom of navigation both in the Middle East and closer to home”. The PM
strongly criticizes Yemen & Iran for still helping terrorist groups like Houthis and Hamas causing
world level wars between the countries like Israeli-Palestinian war & this crisis in the Red Sea. Due to
the crisis about 30% of the world trade has been affected by the Suez Canal. It is important for every
country to know that wars should not be fought at places that may cause the whole world to be in a
bad position. The marine route to Europe via Suez Canal now has the transport of ships dropped by
9% while the route to Europe via Cape of Good Hope has transport of ships increased by 30%
causing sea traffic at some places. We must emphasize and find ways to resolve this world crisis.
Thank You.
