I. LEARNING COMPETENCY
Investigate the relationship between:
1. volume and pressure at constant temperature of a gas
2. explains these relationships using the kinetic molecular theory (S9MT-IIj20)

II. INTRODUCTORY CONCEPT (Background)

Gases are made up of molecules that behave differently. Most of the
properties of gases, like pressure, volume and temperature, can be attributed to the
random and scattered arrangement of its molecules, which are located as far away
as possible from each other because they have very weak intermolecular force of
attraction. The relationships of these properties can be explained using the different
gas laws.

BOYLE’S LAW
The relationship between the volume and pressure of
gases at constant temperature was first stated by Robert Boyle
during the 16th century. He discovered that if you pushed on a
gas, its volume would decrease proportionately. For example, if
you doubled the pressure on a gas (increase in the pressure two
times), its volume would decrease by half (decrease the volume
two times). The opposite is also true. If you reduced the pressure
on a gas by 3.5 times, then its volume would increase by 3.5
times. This law is an example of an inverse relationship – if one
factor increases, the other factor decreases.

Boyle's law states that the volume of a given mass of gas varies
inversely with the pressure when the temperature is kept constant.

KINETIC MOLECULAR THEORY AND BOYLE’S LAW

Boyle’s law is easily explained by the kinetic
molecular theory. The pressure of a gas depends on
the number of times per second that the molecules
strike the surface of the container. If we compress
the gas to a smaller volume, the same number of
molecules are now acting against a smaller surface
area, so the number striking per unit area, and thus
the pressure, is now greater.
III. ACTIVITY
A. EXERCISES

1. Complete the information below regarding the relationship of pressure and

volume when temperature is constant.

PRESSURE VOLUME

Increases ___________

_____________ Increases

doubled ___________

2. Refer to the illustration below in answering the given questions. Write the
letter of your answer on the space provided.

a. Which container has a higher

pressure? ___

b. Which container has a lower

pressure? ____

c. Which container has a higher

volume? ____

A B d. Which
container has a
lower volume? ____

B. ASSESSMENT
Direction: Read and analyze the question below and encircle the correct answer.

1. According to Boyle’s law what is the relationship between pressure and

volume at constant temperature?
A. They are equal.
B. They are directly proportional.
C. They are inversely proportional.
D. Their relationship cannot be determined.

2. At constant temperature, what happens to the pressure when the volume of a

gas decreased?
A. The pressure of the gas also decreased.
B. The pressure of the gas increased.
C. The pressure of the gas is doubled.
D. The pressure of the gas remains unchanged.
3. Which of the following statements correctly describes the relationship
between pressure and volume at constant temperature?
A. At constant temperature, when pressure increases the volume also
increases.
B. At constant temperature, when pressure decreases the volume increases.
C. At constant temperature, when pressure decreases the volume also
decreases.
D. At constant temperature, when pressure increases the volume remains the
same.

4. A sample of a gas has a volume of 20 L under a pressure of 4 atm. What will

be the pressure of this gas if the volume were decreased to 10 L?
A. The pressure is still 4 atm. Since volume decreased, the pressure will
remain the same.
B. The pressure will be 2 atm. Since volume decreased by half, then the
pressure also decreases by half.
C. The pressure will be 8 atm. Since the volume decreased 2 times, then the
pressure will increase 2 times.
D. The pressure of the gas cannot be predicted.

5. Air exhaled by the fishes in the aquarium gets bigger and bigger as it rises.
Which of the statements below best describes the given situation?
A. It gets bigger because the pressure at the bottom of the aquarium is lower
than the pressure near the surface.
B. It gets bigger because the pressure at the bottom of the aquarium is higher
than the pressure near the surface.
C. It gets bigger because the pressure at the bottom of the aquarium and
near the surface is the same.
D. All of the above
