From a milk-deficit na on to a milk-products exporter
The evolu on of the dairy sector in India and the stellar role played by dairy coopera ves since the
launch of Opera on Flood form an integral part of the country’s remarkable growth story a er
Independence. Today, India is the largest producer of milk in the world, achieving an annual produc on
of 221.06 million tonnes during the year 2021-22 & contribu ng 23% of global milk produc on.

The dairy sector assumes a great deal of significance for India on various accounts. As an industry, it
employs more than 80 million rural households, with the majority being small and marginal farmers as
well as the landless. The coopera ve socie es have not only made the farmers self-sufficient but have
also broken the shackles of gender, caste, religion, and community. Women producers form the major
workforce of the dairy sector in the country. The sector is an important job provider, especially for
women, and plays a leading role in women’s empowerment.

Indian Dairy Industry:

Galore of business opportuni es
The total size of dairy market was about 162 billion US $ in 2021. It has grown at the rate of about 15%
per annum during years 2006 to 2021 and is expected to reach a market size of about 375 billion US $ by
2027 as per IMARC 2021 report. The liquid milk market represents about half of the total dairy market in
the country. Of the total liquid milk market, the share of organized sector has increased from 32% to
41% in last 3 years. It is es mated that the share of organized sector would reach to 54% by 2026.

Factors like - increasing urbaniza on, increasing disposable income, transforming in to a health
conscious society, emphasis & growth in cold chain infrastructure in India; growing consump on of dairy
value-added products like ice-creams, cheese, sweets etc., increasing par cipa on of private sector and
milk and milk based products being one of the important part of Indian food culture clearly indicate on
the tremendous business opportuni es in the dairy industry in the years to come.
