Ārāma-rukkha-cetyāni Manussā bhaya-tajjitā.
Many are those who go for refuge to mountains, forests, parks, trees, & shrines: People
threatened with danger.

Netaṁ kho saraṇaṁ khemaṁ Netaṁ saraṇamuttamaṁ

Netaṁ saraṇamāgamma Sabba-dukkhā pamuccati.
That is not the secure refuge, that is not the highest refuge, that is not the refuge, having
gone to which, one gains release from all suffering.

Yo ca Buddhañca Dhammañca Saṅghañca saraṇaṁ gato

Cattāri ariya-saccāni Sammappaññāya passati:
But a person who, having gone to the Buddha, Dhamma, & Sangha for refuge, sees the
four Noble Truths with right discernment:

16
Dukkhaṁ dukkha-samuppādaṁ
Dukkhassa ca atikkamaṁ
Ariyañ-caṭṭhaṅgikaṁ maggaṁ
Dukkhūpasama-gāminaṁ
Stress, the cause of stress, the transcending of stress, and the Noble Eightfold Path, the
way to the stilling of stress.

Etaṁ kho saraṇaṁ khemaṁ Etaṁ saraṇamuttamaṁ

Etaṁ saraṇamāgamma Sabba-dukkhā pamuccatīti.
That is the secure refuge, that is the highest refuge, that is the refuge, having gone to
which, one gains release from all suffering.

SUTTA 经
Dhamma-cakkappavattana Sutta
The Discourse on the Turning of the Wheel of Dhamma

[Evam-me sutaṁ.] Ekaṁ samayaṁ Bhagavā,

Bārāṇasiyaṁ viharati, Isipatane migadāye.
Tatra kho Bhagavā pañca-vaggiye bhikkhū āmantesi.
I have heard that on one occasion the Blessed One was staying at Varanasi in the Game
Refuge at Isipatana. There he addressed the group of five monks:

“Dveme bhikkhave antā pabbajitena na sevitabbā,

“比丘们!有这两边,出家人不应亲近!
There are these two extremes that are not to be indulged in by one who has gone forth—

Yo cāyaṁ kāmesu kāma-sukhallikānuyogo,

Hīno gammo pothujjaniko anariyo anattha-sañhito,
That which is devoted in sensual pleasure in sensual objects: base, vulgar, common,
ignoble, unprofitable;

Yo cāyaṁ atta-kilamathānuyogo,
Dukkho anariyo anattha-sañhito.
And that which is devoted to self-affliction: Painful, ignoble, unprofitable.

Ete te bhikkhave ubho ante anupagamma,

Majjhimā paṭipadā tathāgatena abhisambuddhā,
Cakkhu-karaṇī ñāṇa-karaṇī upasamāya abhiññāya
sambodhāya nibbānāya saṁvattati.
Avoiding both of these extremes, the middle way realised by the Tathagata—
producing vision, producing knowledge—leads to calm, to direct knowledge, to self-
awakening, to Liberation.

And what is the middle way realised by the Tathagata that—producing vision, producing
knowledge—leads to calm, to direct knowledge, to self-awakening, to Liberation?

Ayameva ariyo aṭṭhaṅgiko maggo,

Seyyathīdam, Sammā-diṭṭhi sammā-saṅkappo,

Now this, monks, is the noble truth of stress:

生是苦,老是苦,死是苦,
Birth is stressful, ageing is stressful, death is stressful,

Soka-parideva-dukkha-domanassupāyāsāpi dukkhā,

Sorrow, lamentation, pain, distress, & despair are stressful,

Association with things disliked is stressful, separation from things liked is stressful, not
getting what one wants is stressful,

In short, the five aggregates for clinging are stressful.

The craving that makes for further becoming—accompanied by passion & delight,
relishing now here & now there—i.e. craving for sensual pleasure, craving for becoming,
craving for non-becoming.

Idaṁ kho pana bhikkhave dukkha-nirodho ariya-saccaṁ,

And this, monks, is the noble truth of the cessation of stress:

Yo tassā yeva taṇhāya asesa-virāga-nirodho cāgo

即是那渴爱的止息无余、舍弃、放舍、解脱、无著;
The remainderless fading & stopping, renunciation, relinquishment, release, & letting go
of that very craving.

Idaṁ kho pana bhikkhave dukkha-nirodha-gāminī

Atikkammeva devānaṁ devānubhāvaṁ.
While a great, measureless radiance appeared in the cosmos, surpassing the effulgence
of the deities.

Atha kho Bhagavā udānaṁ udānesi,

“Aññāsi vata bho Koṇḍañño,
Aññāsi vata bho Koṇḍaññoti.”
Then the Blessed One exclaimed: “So you really know, Koṇḍañña? So you really know?”

Itihidaṁ āyasmato Koṇḍaññassa,

Aññā-koṇḍañño tveva nāmaṁ, Ahosīti.
And that is how Ven. Koṇḍañña acquired the name Aññā-Koṇḍañña—Koṇḍañña who
knows.

The chant depicted the Buddha’s victory over transcending the controls of the Maras, deities of the
Heaven of the Four Kings (Catummaharajika) & all heavenly beings. Non-humans, yakkha, spirits,
army troops, the Naga Kings, deities of the Sun, deities of the Moon, Sakkadevarajja, the Brahma, wind,
fire etc – none could cause harm to such great victory. May the 18 mighty heavenly devatas, gather here
to protect. All those who gained success, the savaka disciples, the dhamma & sangha, may all come to
give their blessings. May you gain prosperity & victorious blessings. At that time, the mighty power of
Triple Gem won over the evil Mara, the Buddha fulfilled all the perfections & gained Victory. Brahma,
Sakkadevarajja, and all heavenly beings with great powers, the Naga Kings possessed with great
authorities, were delighted & joyful over the victory by the Buddha under the bodhi tree, conquered
over the Mara. When the Buddha preached about the holy life, that is the most blessed moment. By the
power of the Triple Gem, may you be happy, may victory be with you. May you gain benefits, happiness,
and growth in the Teachings. May you live long, may all be well & smooth.
May you be free from all sickness & pain, may you be well & happy.
