LET’S EQUIP YOUR SELF!

APPLIED SOCIAL SCIENCES

The applied social sciences was introduced as a reaction to the highly segmented and
compartmentalized division of the social science disciplines that dominated western research
training during the late 1990s and until the end of the twentieth century. Scholars from the social
sciences argued that there is a need for more cooperation within the different disciplines of the
social sciences. This means that the different fields of the social sciences must effectively work
together in addressing the issues.

The applied social sciences have different functions and uses. The use of different
theories, concepts, and methodologies from the social sciences provide benefits to individuals,
groups, and the society. The benefits derived from the applied sciences produce numerous
effects to individual members, communities, and groups and to the society in general. Th effects
of the applied social sciences vary and they include increased awareness and knowledge of
oneself and others, attitude and value change, behavioral changes, and structural changes.

LET’S DO THIS!

 Participant Observation Activity. Participate in a community-related development

program organized by your school, community, or religious organization. Spend an
entire day to immerse yourself into the program. Interview people in the community who
benefited from the development program. At the end of the program, write a reflection
paper that will explain how the program, based on your interviews and direct
observation, change or affected the lives of the people in the community, the community
itself, and the country in general. Be able to report to class the result of your immersion
and share your reflection paper.
