DETAIL A

NOTES
1 Maximum depth of wear is 0.005 inch (0.13 mm) measure from unworn face of tooth. See Detail A.

2 Maximum depth of wear is 0.0025 inch (0.064 mm) per surface (0.0050 inch (0.127 mm) on diameter).
Measure depth of wear by comparing sizes of wear sleeve diameter at point of maximum wear to
measurements taken in adjacent areas exhibiting no wear.

3 Spline wear/damage limits.

The spline wear limits are provided to show the required fit between the outer coupling, inner coupling,
and shaft adapter. It is not intended that spline wear be measured as a prescribed overhaul procedure.
Inspect splines for wear and damage visually. Use a white card or similar material to reflect light. If there
is evidence of wear, measure dimension between pins on outer coupling as shown on Detail A. Measure
internal splines on inner coupling in same manner, but use size pins shown on sheet 1. Measure external
splines on outer coupling with straight edge and wire feeler gauge shown on Detail A. Inspect teeth on
inner coupling as shown on Detail B. Wear in excess of limits stated on sheet 1 and/or on Detail A and B
is not acceptable. Inspect all spline teeth for damage such as chipped teeth, nicks, and dents. Chipped
teeth are not acceptable. Very small nicks and dents are acceptable if damage is not detectable with
0.020 inch (0.51 mm) spherical radius inspection probe.

A Acceptable pattern typical of low operating time.

B Acceptable pattern typical of couplings which have

operated with normal misalignment for a longer period of
time than that shown in A.

C Acceptable pattern denoting operation at higher torque

than that shown in A and B.

D Acceptable pattern showing a pitted tooth. This condition is

acceptable on all teeth.

E Pattern shows a more severe condition of tooth pitting than

that shown in D. There is no metal projecting above the
normal face of the tooth, indicating that the pitted area is
polishing over. This condition is acceptable on all teeth.
Couplings with pits larger than 1/32 inch (0.79375 mm)
diameter are not acceptable.
