M-Jet 35 Manual Hull choice

The M-Jet 35 is powerful enough to push a boat up to 80cm long and up to 6kg heavy.

You can freely download my 50cm hull files I used to build my 4G Sprint Boat. This hull can be easily built from
fibreglass or carbon fiber, and is optimised directly for the M-Jet 35.

4G Sprint Hull by M-Jet Development:

https://www.cgtrader.com/free-3d-print-models/hobby-diy/automotive/4g-sprint-hull-for-rc-boats-2022

However, you can use any different hull that meets the following requirements:

You need a hull with a flat plate at the stern. The angle between the stern and this plate needs to be 90 degrees. The
plate has to be at least 75mm long and 36mm wide. The stern needs to be at least 52mm tall. Inside the hull, you
need at least 68mm between the flat plate and the cover hatch (or the top ceiling of the hull) for the Motor Mount
to fit.

Electronics
Motor and ESC choice
• You need a watercooled brushless inrunner with a standard 25mm hole mounting pattern. •
You can choose the size of the motor from 3660 to 4092 based on your preferences. • The
watercooled ESC needs to be chosen based on your motor choice.
• Set your ESC to 0° timing. This will make the motor generate less heat. After you make sure the motor is not
suffering from heat, you can experiment with ESC timing and possibly get slightly more speed. • It is essential to
choose the motor KV correctly. If you want best possible power from your motor, but not make it overheat or
overload the pump, please follow this table.
• The green field is my preferred setup, which I used for my 4G sprint boat. I used a 120A ESC on 0° timing.

Current Rating
(Amps)

Servo
• The integrated servo mount
will accept any standard
servo
with dimensions
approximately
similar to the drawing.
• Recommended torque rating at
least 5kg*cm
• Waterproof servo is a big
advantage
• A smaller servo can be used, as
long as it can produce the
necessary torque stated above.
Then you need to make your
own adaptor plate based on its
specific dimensions.
• The servo needs to have a
circular arm.

M-Jet 35 Manual Tools you need

• Drill with drill bits
• Soldering iron
• Torch
• Knife or dremel to cut through the hull
• Epoxy glue
• Durable vice capable of bending aluminum
• Tools to cut the driveshaft and ride plate: Hacksaw, file
• Allen keys
• Sandpaper
• Pliers
• 3D print the bending tool “45_ride_plate_bender_STL” from the “Ride_plate” folder
6

M-Jet 35 Manual Print Settings

Printer requirements
• FDM 3D Printer of a minimum build volume 90mm x 90mm build plate x 100mm height

Recommended settings for all parts

Using the following settings is very important for getting good tolerances and strength of the parts.

• 0.4mm nozzle
• 0.2mm layer height
• 0.45mm default extrusion width
• 5 perimeters (outer walls)
• 5 top and bottom layers
• 30% cubic infill
• No supports

Material choice
• The best material you can use to print the pump is carbon fiber polycarbonate. That is also the material I
use.
• You can also print all parts in PLA or other materials and they will work just fine, only being less durable. •
Total filament weight is under 200g.
• The tolerances on the parts (for example bearing slots size) are optimised for carbon fiber polycarbonate. If
you choose a different material, you might have to sand some areas or tweak the extrusion factor, to make
the parts fit.

Printing orientation

M-Jet 35 Manual Custom parts you need to order

Metal 3D printed impeller
The impeller is optimised to be 3D printed in aluminium using selective laser melting. You can also choose stainless
steel for possibly better durability, but much higher weight.

SLM metal 3D printing technology should work flawlessly. But beware which
metal 3D printing technology you choose, in some processes like for example
FDM metal filament by Sculpteo, there is some increased shrinkage involved.
This could cause the shaft hole end up too small. I am providing a .STEP file of
the impeller, so that you can easily increase the hole diameter if you need to.

I ordered my impeller SLM 3D printed in aluminium by PCBWay. If you order

one impeller, the price will not exceed 50 $ (to date of M-Jet 35 release). If you
order two of them, price per one will drop rapidly.

https://www.pcbway.com/rapid
prototyping/manufacture/?type=2&reffercode=TOP

If there is the option, always get the impeller printed with 100% infill to keep it
balanced!

After you receive the impeller, check if it is not longer than designed 93.4mm
according to the drawing “m-jet_35_handmade_parts”

If necessary, sand the end down to achieve correct length.

There are also files for you to print a plastic prototype on your own printer.
These files are modified to have thicker blades and solid hub, therefore not
being fully balanced. This is not a preferable option, but will work for first tests.

Screenshot from my PCBWay order:

M-Jet 35 Manual Stainless Steel Grate

The intake grate protects the pump from debris and small rocks. The best option is to order a laser cut grate from
2mm stainless steel, using the DXF file

„m-jet_35_grate_DXF_laser_cutting“

This will be cheapest if you can find some local company that does laser cutting.

After getting it laser cut, you need to finish the two screw holes and drill a slot for the flat head screws.

You can also 3D print the grate as a prototype with worse durability.

Aluminum Ride Plate

You can either order the ride plate laser cut from 2mm aluminum using the DXF file

„m-jet_35_ride_plate_FLAT_DXF_laser_cutting“
Or you can cut it yourself very easily from a 40x2mm aluminum profile using the drawing

„m-jet_35_handmade_parts“

You can cut the ride plate in any length you want – longer one will make the boat more stable, but create more drag.

Do not forget to drill the screw holes for flat head screws.

Then you need to bend the ride plate in a vice using the included 3D printed bending tool.

“45_ride_plate_bender_STL"

Before bending, use a torch to heat up the aluminum and anneal it. This will make bending much

easier.

M-Jet 35 Manual Handmade parts

All handmade parts are described in the drawing

„m-jet_35_handmade_parts“

The materials you need are a 5mm stainless steel shaft, 3mm stainless steel shaft and a 4x3mm
brass tube.

Before you create the flat plates on your driveshaft using a file, make sure the shaft fits your
bearings. If the shaft cannot slide in, clamp the shaft into a drill and spin it. Use fine grit sandpaper
to sand the shaft a little bit until your bearings slide onto it smoothly.

All finished handmade parts together with custom parts:

M-Jet 35 Manual Assembly

1. Insert 10 threaded inserts into the Housing using a soldering iron.
• 4 from the back, 1 into the grease port, 2 to hold intake grate, 1 into the bearing cap area

• 2 to hold the motor mount – these are angled so don’t try to insert them
straight!
2. Insert 2 threaded inserts into the First stage, 1 into Second stage and 1 into Servo Coupler.

3. Glue the Watercooling Tubes into the Housing using epoxy.

11

M-Jet 35 Manual

4. Press the rotary shaft seals into the Housing using a vice, or very carefully a hammer.
5. Press the main bearing 5x19x6 into the Housing. Secure it with Bearing Cap and M3x6.

6. Press fit the Motor Mount Pins into the blind holes in Motor Mount.

7. Attach your shaft coupler to your brushless motor.

12

M-Jet 35 Manual
8. Take a circular servo arm that fits your servo. Insert the servo screw into it before you proceed. Drill through the
servo arm holes with 2mm drill bit. Then use 2 M2x10 to attach the arm to your 3D printed Servo Coupler. Do not
fully tighten these M2x10 screws, leave a 1.5mm gap to compensate for servo misalignment. Center your
servo and mount the assembly onto it, so that the threaded insert faces upwards as in the photo.

9.
Mount your brushless motor to the Motor Mount using 4x M3x30 and 2x M3x10 (or less if your motor only has 4
mounting holes). Mount your servo to the Motor Mount with the Servo Coupler closer to the bottom, using 4
M3x10 with washers. Screw M3x10 into the Servo Coupler.

10. Slide the Motor Mount into the Housing and secure it using 2 M3x25.

11. Slide your Driveshaft through the main bearing and secure it in the coupler. Push some grease
through the Housing grease port and close it using M3x6.
12. Press the O-rings into
First Stage and Second Stage. Press the 5x13x4 bearing into Second Stage. Push some grease
through the Second Stage grease port and close it using M3x6.
14

M-Jet 35 Manual

13. Screw the M5x20 grub screw into the Second Stage as far as possible without too much force. The screw
should reliably hold there with some friction, if not, use glue.
15

M-Jet 35 Manual

14. Slide your Impeller onto the Driveshaft. Make sure it is in full contact with the main bearing and doesn’t get
stuck on the Driveshaft.

15. Rotate the

First Stage and slide it over the second Impeller blade. Close the assembly with Second Stage and secure it using 4x
M3x45.

16. Press your Steering Pin and Steering Shaft into the Steering Crank. Pay attention to the correct orientation of
the flat spot on the Steering Shaft and match it with the flat spot in the Steering Crank. Use a vice or carefully a
hammer, or glue if necessary.

16

M-Jet 35 Manual

17. Insert the assembled Steering Shaft into the pump and secure it using M3x10 in the Servo Coupler.

18. Attach the Nozzle of your choice and secure it using M5 locking nut with washer.
19. Use 4 flat head M3x6 screws to insert the Grate and attach the Ride Plate.

17

M-Jet 35 Manual 20. Assembly finished! Connect the watercooling and test the pump.
18

M-Jet 35 Manual Installation

1. You can find all the dimensions you need in to make the cuts in your hull in the drawing “m-jet_35_hull_cut”
2. Disassemble the pump, until you have the Housing alone.
3. Tape the area around the place for the pump. Draw the shape of the bottom cut first.

4.
Cut away the bottom part using a dremel.

19

M-Jet 35 Manual

5. Cut away the lower part of the stern to be able to access the inner hull surface as shown.
6. Sand the inner hull surface in this spot, until it is all lined up.

20

M-Jet 35 Manual
7. Measure the rest of the cuts, using inner surface of the hull as your reference.

8. Do the rest of the cuts. Test-fit the pump, and continue sanding the hull until the pump fits with
slight resistance. You can also do some small sanding to the pump itself.

21

M-Jet 35 Manual

9. Drill a hole for the steering shaft according to the drawing (I made it too big).
10. Tape the steering shaft hole in the Housing to protect the seal from glue.

11. Glue the pump in using epoxy and clamp it down.

22

M-Jet 35 Manual
12. Add more epoxy from the inside around the pump.

13. Remove the

paper tape and clean the steering shaft hole. Make sure the steering shaft has some space.
