Task 1
Task 1
TASK 1
I watched a video on why the asbestos industry still exists despite the fact that
the use of asbestos has been banned in many countries.
The authors of the video explain that the use of asbestos still continues today due
to several factors, including the economic interests of corporations, political
connections and the lack of alternative materials. In addition, there are many
myths and insufficient information about the health risks of asbestos.
TASK 2
The deadly asbestos industry is still alive due to the fact that despite scientific
evidence highlighting the dangers of asbestos, two million tons of the carcinogen
are exported every year to the developing world where it is often handled with
little to no regulation. Additionally, for some communities like Asbest, Russia,
asbestos mining is a major part of their livelihood and is celebrated with
monuments, songs, and even a museum. However, the effects of asbestos
exposure are undeniable in places like Libby, Montana, where 400 people have
died from asbestos-related diseases, and many more are suffering.
LEARNING A NEW THEME “ASBESTOS”
TASK 4

TASK 12
1. Fabrics made of asbestos have good strength and are mainly used in
applications where non-inflammability is essential, such as conveyor belting for
hot materials, industrial packings, fireproof clothing, and insulation.
2. One of the Emperors of Rome delighted guests by throwing a tablecloth made
of asbestos into fire and then removing it unchanged from the flame.
3. Early uses for asbestos included such articles as handkerchiefs and table
coverings, and the Chinese used asbestos to make false sleeves that could be
cleaned by putting them in the fire.
4. All the dirt was burned off, leaving the asbestos clean.
5. The soft, long, white fibers of chrysotile asbestos can be spun into yarn by the
usual processes, but a proportion of cotton fiber is usually added to help bind the
asbestos fibers together.
TASK 13
1. What substance did Marco Polo tell his friends about that could be woven into
attractive textiles?
2. What were some of the purposes for which asbestos was used in flameproof
clothing?
3. What is the strangest characteristic of asbestos fibers?
TASK 15
TASK 20
1. I haven't given much thought to the kind of house I'd like to have. However, I
imagine a house with a dedicated workspace for my engineering projects and
experiments. It would also be great to have a backyard or garden where I can
relax and spend time outdoors.
2. My dreams as an engineering student include developing new technologies and
solving complex problems that benefit society. I aspire to work for a company or
start my own business.
TASK 21
Norman wants to buy a big house with two entrances for his dental office. He
looks at houses every week with his fiancee and checks the lending rates. He
found a perfect house once, but it had lots of problems like termites and
asbestos. Norman is still searching for a house after a year.
