TSUCHIURA ENGINEERING STANDARDS
Heat-treated equivalent steels
1. Scope
This standard specifies the following points on heat-treated equivalent steels such as quenched
and tempered equivalent steels Note 1), and normalized equivalent steels Note 2).
P P
a) Category
b) Chemical compositions and mechanical properties
c) Designation of the material on drawings
d) Designation of hardness
e) Precautions for using heat-treated equivalent steels not specified in this standard.
f) Action to be taken when using old drawing
Note 1) Quenched and tempered equivalent steels are special steels having hardness and
mechanical properties corresponding and/or nearly equal to general steels and/or parts
which are normally quenched and tempered. Quenched and tempered equivalent steels
for machining are produced by controlling the rolling conditions in steel manufacturing
process. Quenched and tempered equivalent steels for forging (the impact values are
slightly lower than general steels) are produced by controlling the heating and cooling
conditions in forging.
Note 2) Normalized equivalent steels are special steels which are produced by controlling the
rolling conditions in steel manufacturing process so that the uniform microstructure and
hardness are guaranteed to be equal to those of normally normalized steels. (Forged
parts to which “forging normalization” is conducted using residual forging heat are
excluded.)

When using a kind of steel that has no material symbol specified in Tsuchiura Works, enter the
material symbol specified by the steel manufacturer.
5. Designation of hardness
a) In principle, it is not necessary to designate the hardness of a quenched and tempered
equivalent steel for machining and/or a normalized equivalent steel on a drawing. However,
designate the hardness conforming to Table 1 if needed.
b) When using a quenched and tempered equivalent steels for forging, designate the hardness
of forged part on the drawing with the hardness value applied to S45C as specified in TES
101-113 for those which toughness is prior to hardness. However, it is required to designate
the corresponding hardness after getting agreement with the forging section and the steel
manufacturer through coordination,
6. Precautions for employing the quenched and tempered equivalent steels not included in this
standard
a) The Design Dept. must have coordination with the personnel in charge of material in the
Production Engineering Dept beforehand when employing the Quenched and Tempered
Equivalent Steels not included in this standard.
b) When the specified hardness range or hardness variation of gear material is deemed to affect
the machining tool life, the Design Dept. must have coordination with the personnel in charge
of the machining planning.
The Design Dept. must use the old drawing after revising it each time when opportunity arises

Note 3):
The drawing for a part made of the quenched and tempered equivalent steel specified in this
standard but designated with a different material symbol or material description from those
specified in this standard.
Note 4):
The Design Dept must revise the corresponding drawing when requested from the Production
shops (including the material procurement shop) to change the description.

*1): Material symbol used in Tsuchiura Works for Heat-Treated Equivalent Steels
*2): Steel manufacturer’s material symbol is used in case the material symbol used in Tsuchiura Works is not specified.
Steel names in the columns surrounded with bold lines can be used. (All alphameric descriptions with the host computer are made in capitals.)
*3): The mechanical properties are the values obtained from the test piece which diameter is equal to 1/4 φ of the material diameter (φ) from φ20 to φ80 mm.
