ACKNOWLEDGMENT

In performing our field work, we had to take the help and guideline of some respected
persons, who deserve our greatest gratitude. The completion of this report gives us much
Pleasure. We would like to show our gratitude to EN AHMAD HALMI FAIZOL BIN
MOHAMAD and EN HASRUL BIN ARIFFIN for giving us a good guideline for field work
throughout numerous consultations.

We would also like to expand our deepest gratitude to all those who have directly and
indirectly guided us in doing this field work. In addition, we were given the task to do a field
work about curve ranging, located at Peladang Setiu Agro Resort, Setiu, Terengganu. and
students required to follow the procedure and details work to accomplish this field works.

Thanks to all who are involved in carrying out this task directly or indirectly. Many
people, especially our classmates and team members itself, have made valuable comment
suggestions on this practical report which gave us an inspiration to improve our practical
report.
We thank all the people for their help directly and indirectly to complete practical report.

1.0 INTRODUCTION

Curves are regular bends provided in the lines of communication like roads, railways, and
canals etc. to bring about gradual change of direction. They enable the vehicle to pass from
one path on to another when the two paths meet an angle. They are also used in the vertical
plane at all changes of grade to avoid the abrupt change of grade at the apex. There two types
of curve construction such as horizontal curves that provided in the horizontal plane to have
the gradual change in direction are known as horizontal curves. They have constant radius
required to connect two straights set out on the ground. The usages of this curve are such as
roads, railways, kerb lines, pipelines, and may be set out in several ways, depending on their
length and radius. Next, vertical curves which is provided in the vertical plane to obtain the
gradual change in grade are called as vertical curves. Curves may be circular or parabolic.
Curves are generally arc of parabolas. Curves are laid out on the ground along the centre line

of the work. Vertical curves are used in highway and street vertical alignment to provide a
gradual change between two adjacent grade lines.

Need of providing curves:

i. To bring about gradual change in direction of motion.
ii. To bring about gradual change in grade and for good visibility.
iii. To alert the driver so that he/she may not fall asleep.

2.0 OBJECTIVE

i. To measure the roadway curve in Peladang Setiu Agro Resort.

1. Preparation and Planning 1. Reece the site to identify the
proposed road position according to
the site planning.
2. Identify the nearest traverse station to
use as a re refence point.
3. Calculates the data exit set according
to figure 3.

2. Setting out computation From the data given, calculate:

I. Bearing offset to all corners of
building

6
II.ii. Distance offset to all corner of
building.
3. Point setup/ Datum establishment 1. Select survey point to start
observation. (These points are being
confirmed with previous traversing
and levelling surveys – Stn 3)

Figure 4: point setup

4. Setting out Procedure I. Based from pre-comp plan select the

instrument station.
II. The instrument station should be the
nearest to project site.
III. From the figure 1, set-up the
instrument at station 3 and prism at
station 4 as reference bearing.
IV. Record the bearing and distance
from station 3 to 4 in the setting out
form.
V. Then set bearing from station 3 to
point A to determine the point A
location.
VI. Roughly measure the distance from
station 3 to point A using tape then
precisely mark the point using mini
prism.
VII. Using the same method mark all the
point from station 3 to B, C, D and
E

7.0 DISCUSSION

As a result of the discussion and the data we have done, we found that the shape of the curve
we got is according to the shape of the actual situation and the results of the field work data
we did do not have any problems. When we did this survey work, we did have face some
constraints while doing this work. This is because there are two medium size of tree that
block our target from total station to prism. But we successfully carried out the survey work
for curve. Nevertheless, we have used software such as AutoCAD to draw curves according
to the data
obtained. Our AutoCAD drawing results can refer to the page above.

11
8.0 CONCLUSION

In conclusion, a simple curve has the same radius value, and it is used at the first and last
point. As a result of this practical work carried out, we were able to know the concept of
curve range and gained knowledge on how to operate the equipment while doing field work.
The distance between the points is 1m long. Therefore, we can measure the total distance of
the curve easily using a tape measure. Therefore, the shape of the curve there is according to
the shape of the actual situation. Lines to obtain the shape of a simple curve path can be
produced according to the actual size to be included in the report for more accuracy. We must
carry out this review very carefully so that it doesn’t cause any problems when making
calculations or when drawing work on the data obtained. We must also read the data at the
total station with zero negligence because the data needs to be transferred to the drawing.
When having the wrong data, the curve drawing can easily be disturbed, or the shape is not
the same as the real one. This may cause the data to be fetched repeatedly.
