Due: 11.5.2022
Country: Egypt
Committee: Human Rights Council
Topic: Death penalty
Delegate: Kamran Karic

In Egypt, death penalties are only applied when a criminal has been convicted of more
than two crimes, has been found guilty of both, and has been charged by the court for both.
When a person is charged with a death punishment by the court, the president has the option
of pardoning him and allowing him to live if he believes he is not guilty or has been handled
unfairly. Additionally, the charges must have some connection to harming others or joining
terrorist groups, both of which put the lives of others in jeopardy.

In article 2 of Egypt's 2014 Constitution, it is declared that the principles of Islamic

sharia are the main source of legislation. As a result, sheria laws governs the country.
Because Islam as a religion forbids people from harming one another, the same applies to
Sheria law. Furthermore, Egypt seeks to obey all Sharia laws, even the most severe ones,
such as death punishment or chopping parts of the body with which a person has stolen
something, as mentioned in Quran verse 5:38: "Cut off the hands of the thief, male or female,
as a punishment by example from Allah for their crime: for Allah is Exalted in strength."
Following these rules, Egypt's crime rate is low, and people are less inclined to commit
crimes than to uphold the law.

Egypt has been a very safe country, with crime rates decreasing over time. Yes, death
penalties are brutal, but they are only employed in the most serious circumstances, those for
which the Quran has specified that the death penalty is permissible. Furthermore, we do not
prefer the death penalty that's why our president has the authority to pardon someone if he
deems they have been wrongfully sentenced. Before their death sentence, we also allow
offenders to pray and seek Allah for forgiveness, as well as ask for forgiveness from the
family they have harmed. We believe that anything can be forgiven if forgiveness is
requested, and that a person can be pardoned if they get forgiveness from their family and
request that the crime be forgiven. However, there are circumstances in which this is not
possible, such as being linked to a terrorist organization or participating in a terrorist attack

not follow them.
