Modeling of Definite Time Over-Voltage and

Under-Voltage Relay

Objective:

At the end of this lab session students will be able to

 Understand the working of “Definite Time Voltage Relay”.

Laboratory Task:
A voltage relay protects the system in over-voltage as well as in under-voltage conditions.
Implement the logic of a voltage relay that must protect the system in case of abnormal voltage.
Relay must have resetting capability.

Procedure:
Step 1:

Simulate a small radial power system having a single generating source (three-phase
programmable source), and a single load connected through circuit breaker as shown in the
figure.

Set the properties of each block as mentioned below. Keep all other parameters as it is.

System Frequency: 50 Hz
Total Simulation Time: 0.5 s
Solver: Ode23tb (stiff/TR-BDF2)
Solver reset Method: Robust

Powergui:
Simulation Type: Discrete
Sample Time (sec): 50e-6

Three-phase programmable voltage source (Source):

Voltage (Phase to Phase): 11e3 V
Frequency: 50
Time variation of: Amplitude

Type of variation: Table of time-amplitude pairs

Amplitudes Values (pu): [1 1.2 1 0.8 1]
Time Values: [0 0.6 1.8 3 4]
Three-Phase Breaker (Circuit Breaker):
Initial status of breaker: closed

Three-Phase Series RLC Load (Load):

Configuration: Y grounded
Nominal voltage: 11e3 V
Active Power (MW): 100e6 W
Inductive reactive power: 100 VAR
Capacitive reactive Power: 0 VAR

Note: Set phase-to-ground measurements in V-I measurement block.

Step 2:
Measure the RMS value of phase-voltages by steady state analysis of the system
(powergui). Calculate the Pick-up values of voltage for the relay.

Under voltage value = 0.9 * RMS value of voltage = 0.9* v=6345.61 v

Over voltage value = 1.1 * RMS value of voltage = 1.5*6345.61 v =9518.4415 v

Set the time settings of relay equal to 0.08 s. It means relay will wait for four cycles of voltage
before tripping the circuit breaker.

Timer (On/Reset):
Use timer to reset the relay at 0.24 s. By using timer apply only a pulse of 0.01 s width.

Step 3:

Complete the logic implementation of “DTOV & DTUV Relay”. The output on scope must be like
one shown in the figure below.

Step 4:
Also check the performance of the relay in following conditions.

1. Three-phase programmable voltage source (Source):

Time Values: [0 0.07 0.2 0.3 0.4]
Time delay = 0.06 s
Reset at 0.25 s and 0.42 s

2. Three-phase programmable voltage source (Source):

Time Values: [0 0.1 0.2 0.28 0.38]
Time delay = 0.05 s
Reset at 0.24 s and 0.45 s
