Mathematics 4
Lesson 1: Visualizing Volume of Solid Figures Using Non-standard Units

Key concept:

• Volume is the amount of space a solid figure occupies.

• A solid figure is a three-dimensional shape.
• Non-standard units can be used to measure volume.

Rona and Liza want to find the volume of an empty box.

First, they filled the box with

pebbles. About 92 pebbles
92 pebbles filled in the box.

Next, they filled the box

with corn kernels. About
270 corn kernels
270 corn kernels.

Then, they filled the box

with balls about 75 balls
75 balls
filled the box.

Lesson 2: Visualizing Volume of Solid Figures Using Standard Units

Key concept:

• Standard units are consistent and accurate.

• Cubes can be used to approximate the volume of a container.
• To find the volume of a space figure, count the number of cubic units need to fill the space figure.
• Some of the standard measures of volume are the cubic centimeter (cm³), cubic decimeter (dm³),
cubic meter (m³), and cubic millimeters (mm³).

1 cubic unit

2 cubic unit

4 cubic unit
Lesson 3: Finding the Volume of Rectangular Prism

Key concept:

• Rectangular prism is a solid figure that has six faces, twelve edges and eight vertices.
• Vertex (vertices in plural form) is the corner of the shape.
• Edge is a segment where two faces of a prism meet.
• Volume is expressed in cubic units.
