ELA Persuasive Speech

So we all have a subject we don’t like or think isn’t important, right? Like
raise your hands and tell me which subject you think isn’t important. (answer like
3 of them) Mine is Social, and I'm gonna be honest I never really saw the point of
learning social studies since grade one. Even back then when I was a lively child I
found social really draining and unimportant. Since then I really think we should
remove most of it and add in other, major subjects that are actually important for
the future. The kind of subjects that some adults wish they learned back when
they were in school. For example the stuff we should be learning about is taxes,
how we manage bills and expenses, and maybe even how we run a business if
we want to start one.

Let me ask you guys something. Do you remember anything from social
studies in grade 7? And if you do, please recall it. So yes, there's no way we will
be repeating the treaties that happened more than 200 years ago. Let alone be
repeating the exact years. There's no way!

So if we are learning about things that aren’t important, where are the
things that are important? Well they’re not there unfortunately, but here are my
ideas on what could be added in place of these units. Some of my ideas are to
add strategies to paying taxes and finances. Most of us don’t know that there are
obligations and there are various types of taxes, and many students even after
university didn’t know what those were. Another idea is to learn about how we
manage money. Like how budgeting, banking, and how money transfers work.
How we can avoid or handle threats like fraud and scams, and the list can go on
and on, and surprisingly, there is no unit based on these topics. There should be
units that prepare students for the real world and not units where we have to
recite and repeat. There are more units we could learn that are more important
than the ones we have now.

However, there are units that are really important in social, politics and the
parties and how to vote for those parties are super important for students to
learn, as well as learning about the history of our country. But these topics aren’t
taught to us much and it's rather the stuff we don’t remember that are, it should
be the other way around. Schools should give students lessons on the more
important stuff, that way students can have an easier life once they’re done with
school, and be able to know what was once never taught.

We talked about how social studies teaches us things we could barely

recall, and in place of those we should add things that are important and will help
us in the future. There’s also some things that are taught in social that should be
talked about more but aren’t mentioned much. But with these ideas in place, we
can help all students be better prepared for what's to come past school, and they
would be thinking that what they learned about expenses and taxes was
important, instead of wondering if learning about the great historic treaties that
were signed in 1763 will ever help them out in life. Thank you.
