PHILIPPINE OPERA
As we learned, Opera is a staged drama set to music in the entire performance of
the characters. Performed entirely with vocal pieces with instrumental accompaniment
by orchestra or musical ensemble.
Philippines has a lot of Opera theaters before, such as Zorilla, Principe Alfonso,
Variedades, Manila Grand Opera House, Quiapo and Tondo Theaters but among these,
Metropolitan Theater remained in current period.
In Zorilla Theater, Sandugong Panaginip written and composed by Pedro Paterno
was the First Opera being staged. Metropolitan Theater staged a Filipino Opera entitled
“Lakangbini” of Patricio Mariano on December 19, 1933. Whle the Cultural Center of the
Philippines staged the famous Operas composed by the librettist Felipe Padilla De Leon
eintiled “Noli Me Tangere” and “El Filibusterismo” from the Novel of Dr. Jose Rizal.
Some of the important persons related to the Philippine Opera are: Bonifacio
Abdon, the First Filipino Opera Conductor, Dr. Ramon Javier, First Filipino Opera
Impresario and Jovita Fuentes, the Prima Diva of Philippine Opera and awarded as
National Artist for Music.

Exercises:
1. After reading and re-writing some important facts about Philippine Opera, it is now
time for you to design a page of magazine containing the given facts.
Layout the contents and some related images. This can be done through
handwritten or using an application (for phone or computer). Size of the page is
8.5x11 in (Letter Size). Submit your work on the next face to face meeting.
2. You will be graded according to the Layout of the Magazine page and Organization
of ideas given.
