LESSON 2: Genes and Alleles

Intended Learning Outcomes

At the end of the lesson, you must have:

➢ Explain how a trait is being express in relation to alleles; ➢

Differentiate genes and alleles.

Application and Assessment:

Direction: Answer the questions correctly.

A.

1. A person with one dominant allele for a brown hair and one recessive allele for
black hair will be having a black hair. TRUE or FALSE? Justify your answer. (2pts)

FALSE – because the resulting characteristic is due to both alleles being

expressed equally.

2. A child with one dominant allele for a blue eye and one recessive allele for a brown
eye will be having a blue eye. TRUE or FALSE? Justify your answer. (2pts)

TRUE Because it only needs one copy of dominant blue eye to have blue eye.

3. A woman with two recessive alleles for a straight hair will be having a straight hair.
TRUE or FALSE? Justify you answer. (2pts)
TRUE Because it was called Recessive alleles only show their effect if the
individual has two copies of the allele (also known as being homozygous).

4. A puppy is having a dominant allele for a black fur and a dominant allele for white
fur, what is the color of the puppy? Explain. (2pts)

White because the Dominant Allele only needs 1 copy of allele.

B. What is the difference between genes and alleles, the answer must be on your own
terms? (5pts)
For me, GENES is like the starting part and Alleles is the branch of genes. For example,
Shampoo it serves as a gene and its alleles are the product that has different names
but it was still a shampoo.

C. Write a reflection on what you have learned in this lesson. (5 points)

I Learn that Genes are passed from parents to offspring and contain the information
needed to specify traits. Genes are arranged, one after another, on structures called
chromosomes. Also, an allele is a variant form of a gene. Some genes have a variety of
different forms, which are located at the same position, or genetic locus, on a chromosome.
Humans are called diploid organisms because they have two alleles at each genetic locus,
with one allele inherited from each parent. I have also learned that; Alleles can be either
dominant or recessive.
