Rizal
- Rizal never got his doctorate in medicine.
o He was only issued a licentiate degree.

Rizal’s Past Loves

Leonor Rivera
- The woman Rizal was in love with.
- Sweetheart from 11 years.
- Rizal was branded as a Filibustero, a troublemaker.
- Her family hid from Leonor all letters of Rizal as they don’t want her to be
associated with a troublemaker.
- The family of Rivera forced her to marry Henry Kipping.

Seisan
- Another woman Rizal met with.
- A Japanese samurai’s daughter.
- Japanese language.
- He left Seisan as he had commitment issues.

Gertrude Becket
- Daughter of Rizal’s English landlord.
- London annotating the Sucesos de las Islas Filipinas.
- British Museum.
- Rizal suddenly left London for Paris to avoid Gertrude, who was seriously falling
in love with him.

Nelly Boustead
- Courted by Rizal after Leonor’s marriage.
- Met her in Paris, France.
- Antonio Luna.
o In love with Nelly
o Rizal volunteered to act as a wingman for Antonio Luna
o Rizal ended up trying to court her
o Antonio Luna was mad

Suzanne Jacoby
- Rizal lived in Brussels, Germany.
- He lived in the house of the Jacoby sisters: Marie (48) and Suzanne (45).

Josephine Bracken
- Irish woman
- Married with Rizal hours before his execution
- George Taufer – her stepdad
o Bracken and Taufer travelled to PH to cure Taufer’s eye problem.
o Taufer and Rizal had a child, but resulted in a miscarriage.

Noli Me Tangere
- First published in 1887 in Berlin.
- Talks about the social cancer in the Philippines.
- Derived the phrase “Noli Me Tangere” from the Bible (John 20:13-17) stating
that lepers were made to wear signs bearing these words to warn passers-by
regarding this condition.

Flow
- Starts at the town of San Diego.
- Organized by the Principalia of the town Kapitan Tiago for his friend,
Crisostomo Ibarra.
- Introduced to Padre Damaso, the head priest of the town of San Diego.
o He was also introduced to Padre Salvi, the Don/Dona, and Tiniente
Guevara.
- Chicken – Galana Para Ser Sacrificana.
- Ibarra was given the juiciest meat (breast), while Padre Damaso was given the
neck and wings (leftovers).
- Whilst going to his hotel, Tiniente Guevara intercepted Ibarra.
o Warned him that something bad might happen to him, like his father
Don Rafael Ibarra.
 Don Rafael – Wealthy, Protector of San Diego,
 Killed a tax collector and was incarcerated in Prison.
 Padre Damaso made his move and made sure that Don Rafael
dies.
- Kapitan Tiago – had a hard time conceiving a child.
o Through the “intervention” of Padre Damaso, Maria Clara was born.
