Background of the Study

Facebook was founded on February 4, 2004, by Mark Zuckerberg, Eduard Savarin,

Dustin Moskovitz, and Chris Hughes in a Harvard dorm room Facebook has rapidly become one
of the most social networking sites in the world. Within the year the social networking site
accrued over 1 million. Which has since grown exponentially to hit over 2 billion (Zuckerberg
2010). According to Nard and Abdullah (2016), academic performance is the knowledge gained
which is assessed by marks by a teacher and/or educational goals set by students and teachers to
be Achieved over a specific time.

Facebook may lead to lower academic performance like spending too much of using
Facebook. Students will be distracted set of matters and it can affect their academic performance
due to being immersed online

Facebook being a social networking site, provides an online platform on which students
create profiles, promote and share information and content, and have interactions with contacts
both known and unknown. Facebook has expanded recently, which has led to its use by people of
all generations extensively. Several types of research examine this online platform's attraction
and its persuasive character and the reason that people of every kind and different ages to this
community. Other studies show that Facebook extension presence can have effects that are
harmful to academic performance. If students spend most of their time on Facebook their
academic performance will be reduced and thus their grades. A day, students should spend at
least 30-35 minutes surfing Facebook. They surf for only three to four minutes on each visit
update, but they severally visit Facebook a day. Although students consider Facebook distracting
and consuming a lot of time, they note that they can't stop visiting the website because they
prefer it and use it to contact family members and friends. (Kirkpatrick).

This study aims to understand the effects of Facebook on academic performance and the
relationship between the Facebook and academic performance of students of selected high
schools of SIBTECH to know the effects of Facebook.

Theoretical Framework

The study was informed by the flow theory also called "Optimal experience" Flow theory
was proposed by Mikayla (sikszentmihalyi 1997) described flow as the state in which one is so
involved in an activity that nothing else seems to matter. The theory is useful in the study since a
self-regulated person can be seen to be conscious of his/her environment while an unregulated
individual seems to be immersed in an activity without environmental consciousness. Although
the user is delighted with the networking activities and appears to be in command, the sense of
time becomes distorted. Facebook activities end up taking the time that would have been spent
on studies. Distractions are excluded from consciousness because of the absorption in the social
activity. The students are only aware of what is relevant to the task at hand and forget about
other things like their studies. (Wanjohi, 2015).

The relationship between theory and Facebook involves using existing theories to analyze
and make sense of the various aspects of the platform and its effect on individuals and society.
Flow theory states the effects of Facebook on academic performance many students spend more
time on Facebook rather than studying.

Theory of Academic Performance

Students have the capability for extraordinary academic achievement in a university

environment. This proposition diverges among the different students. Down to the earth, earth
accomplishments happen in day-to-day practice in university settings, At the beginning of the
semester, the teacher and administrators take a turn to inspire the students to pursue their dreams
to come out flying colors at the end of the study. Since accomplishments are a shared vision of
the entire academic community, a Theory of performance is applicable in many contents. The
theory of academic performance (TOP) emanates from Elgar (2007), there are six components of
performance levels and they are the level of knowledge, levels of skills, level of identity,
personal factors, and fixed factors, and proposed axioms for effective performance as performer
mindset, immersion in an enriching environment, and engagement in reflective practice the
theory of performances challenges educators to improve their performance through
empowerment to help others learn effectively grow. This type of learning will foster quick
success and produce knowledge that will influence society. Inferring from the study (1998)
performances indicate learning for quality. This process creates an environment where
performance exceeds the expectations of the involved in producing the desired result will reduce

higher performance will also increase capability, capacity, and acceptance applying the academic
performance theory to the private university results, the performers will need to stabilize the
students of the forefront and encourage the backing students to improve drastically. The
performer can set challenging goals for the student's beginning of semester failures as part of
rubrics to motivate high performance. This intervention should be a gradual process. (Elgar,
2007)

The relationship theory of academic performance is the theory states that there are six
components of academic levels such as level of knowledge, level of skills, level of identity,
personal factors, and fixed factors.

Facebook is a widely used social networking platform founded by Mark Zuckerberg in

2004. It allows users to create profiles, connect with friends, share content such as photos and
videos, and engage in various online activities such as joining groups and events.

Academic Performance:

Academic performance refers to the measurable outcomes of a student's engagement with

educational activities, courses, and assessments. It encompasses achievements in areas such as
class participation, homework completion, exam results, grades, and overall comprehension of
academic material. Academic performance is often used as an indicator of a student's proficiency
and understanding of a particular subject or course.

Studies:

In a general sense, studies refer to the systematic and organized learning or investigation
of a subject, topic, or field. This can involve academic pursuits, scientific research, or personal
exploration. Studies may include activities such as reading, conducting experiments, analyzing
data, and gaining knowledge through various educational methods. The term is broad and can be
applied to formal education as well as self-directed learning.

Poi and Lou (2010), utilized the Facebook group for a secondary Chinese language
class. They noticed that Facebook was an excellent avenue to share learning resources and give
comments. It also allowed the teacher to organize learning activities conveniently. However,
students must sense safety, security, and comfort when using the said social media
(Karahasanovic et al,2009). This guarantees the effectiveness of social media utilization as an

educational platform, especially in crisis time, since the students widely use these for
socialization, communications, and sharing of resources with other students, Also, Moran ital.
(2011) concluded in their study that students were more comfortable using Facebook for
educational purposes than teachers because they were more preferred to use conventional
communication technology, such as email, call, or text.

Wang et al. (2011) conducted an exploratory study utilizing Facebook groups as

learning management systems through a survey of student’s perceptions. They found that
Facebook allows teachers and students to post announcements, share resources, conduct online
discussions, and join weekly activities. Moreover, it gives control to the teacher compared with a
commercial learning management system. Similarly, Mishaal et al. (2012) concluded that
students were satisfied both their learning using Facebook, and they liked to continue using
Facebook groups for future learning areas. However, using Facebook was more suited to young
learners since they were digital natives willing to adopt new technology than mature learners
(Radanovich et al, 2010

Facebook is one of the most popular and rapidly expanding online communities.
Facebook is a very effective place for businesses and online sellers with over 845 million users.
New customers can be easily attracted online relationships can be established with the use of
Facebook to reach the younger generation, social media has become an important conduct for
global marketing communications and is commanding a greater share of advertising budgets,
organizations, administrations, and researchers are all interested in the value of ads on social
media sites like Facebook (Sabena and Khanna, 2013).

Local literature

In the Philippines, the educational system has adopted various learning modalities where
students can easily access learning, and one of those is the utilization of Facebook. According to
some teachers, they preferred to use this social network site since students are teachers who are
already familiar with this, aside from the fact that Facebook is indeed user-friendly (Philippine
News Agency, 2020). Presently, Facebook is being used by teachers and students both in public
and private ways to integrate socialization in school which is one of the important roles of
education. Through this, it can enhance the communication between the Instructors and the
students, promote collaboration, and develop the student’s computer and language skills.

Likewise, Facebook is found to be well-suited for sharing discussions and thoughts about current
events. (Philippine News Agency, 2020).

Unfortunately, Filipino students have abused the advantages that Facebook extends
to them and have been using it without caution and moderation. Eventually, Facebook has
greatly affected their academic lives. Generally, as Garcia (2011) stated Facebook has an
apparent effect, both positive and negative, on students, in 2011, Kirschner and Karpinski found
that Facebook users spent less time studying and they had lower grades than those who did not
use SNS. Alexander Guido (2017), over the course of several years, social media has changed
dramatically. Because of social media, people today can exchange details about their ideas,
feelings, personal information, pictures, and videos at a truly astonishing level. Social
networking is one of the most active web-based activities in the Philippines, with Filipinos being
declared as the most active users on several web-based social networks such as Facebook,
Instagram, Snapchat, and Twitter. The use of social media has become so extensive in the
Philippines that the country has been tagged as "The social networking capital of the world” and
has also become part of the Filipino cyberculture.

The widespread Facebook addiction in the country can be explained by various factor's
wich constantly influence Filipinos. Elvin (2010) and Radwan (2011) cited in their internet
articles that unfulfilled social needs and social approval are some of the reasons of social
networking addiction. In an economically depressed country like the Philippines, there are many
social issues that have not been resolved through the social networking sites, victims of these
social odds wich are sometimes unaccepted in their community can easily socialize and they
contribute to the increasing number of Facebook users.Aside from social problems with causes
Facebook addiction. Elvin (2011) added that the availability of Facebook on mobile phones also
intensifies the cause of this type of addiction. The country has been nicknamed as the highest
percentage of Facebook users in relation to it's total number of internet users
(facebookPhilippines.ph). These surveys only shows the mobile phones part in the worsening
Facebook usage in the country.

With the increasing popularity of Facebook, students are joining and using it in their
social and academic lives. The huge popularity of Facebook among students has brought
researcher's attention to investigate the phenomenon. Most research regarding online social
networks in terms of profile management identity creation and friending behavior. This study
investigates the effects of Facebook on academic performance through the social capital concept.
This research has been conducted on the Master’s degree students from the University of Eastern
Finland and quantitative methods techniques have been applied for data analysis. The research
has found that the use of Facebook has a light effect on students’ academic performance. Further
results found that Facebook is bridging, bonding, and maintaining existing relationships but it is
not very effective in making new relations. Facebook is increasing students’ social capital
effectively, due to its huge popularity and must use of communication channels among university
students. The daily use of Facebook is increasing communication among the users, consequently,
Facebook users participate more in extracurricular activities than non-Facebook users. Among
university students, Facebook is perceived as a cheap, fast entertaining medium of
communication and students do not consider Facebook as a dominant phenomenon over their
students. (Muhammad Kashia).

UI Haw and Chand (2012) investigated the usage and popularity of a famous social
media network (Facebook) among university students with a special focus on the gender-based
comparison and impact of the selected social medium on their academic performance. The two
researchers evaluate the pattern and frequency of Facebook use among university students while
focusing on gender the majority of the users (61%) agree that this social medium has adverse
effects of Facebook on academic performance. Further analysis reveals that among these 61%
majority of the respondents were male. In addition to the adverse effects of Facebook on
academic performance, there was also an option that the use of Facebook makes it hard for them
to perform the best in their career performance. However, the researchers feel that the latter
opinion is not very clear and established and needs further investigation.

This research analysis shows that using social media, especially in terms of using
Facebook is equally popular among male and female students of the university under study.
Researchers evaluate that the majority of the users agree that this social medium has adverse
effects on their academic performance. These studies related to our study in the way of

investigating the effects of social media on academic achievements among students. They are

Local studies

Facebook has paved the way for faster, more comfortable, and efficient social interaction.
Even though many social networking sites preceded it, Facebook is the current biggest social
networking site with over six hundred million users worldwide and it has an annual growth of
45.2% (Inside Facebook Gold, June 2011). In addition, it has more than 28 million users in the
Philippines which ranks no. 8 in Facebook statistics by country (socialbakers.com, 2012).

Unfortunately, Filipino students have abused the advantages that Facebook extends to
them and they have been using it without caution and moderation. Eventually, Facebook has
greatly affected their academic lives. Generally, Garcia (2011) stated that Facebook usage has
apparent effects, both positive and negative, on students. In 2010, Kirsches and Karpinski found
that Facebook users spent less time studying and had lower grades than those who did not use
SNS. Alexander S. Gudia (2017).

Studies show that university students are big fans of FB, but to date,no local study
documenting the association between FB use and academic performance among Filipino college
students has yet been published. Thus this research investigated the extent of FB, this research
investigated the extent of FB use among Filipino college students in a private university in the
Philippines and correlated it to their General Weighted Average (GWA). A total of six hundred
eight-six (686) freshmen and sophomores participated in the survey. Results showed a weak but
positive correlation between FB use and GWA, implying that more time spent on fb is associated
with better academic performance. This maybe attributed to the finding that most of the students
use Facebook to update themselves on school studies and work with other students in completing
course and school requirements. The students spend provides evidence that FB offers a useful
platform for students academic communication. Details of school related FB use by students as
well as teachers maybe subject for future studies (Alciav. Camon,2019)

Relevance of the study

The relevance of the study about this topic is Facebook is a popular social media platform
that can be both beneficial and distracting for students. Facebook can provide a platform for
students to connect with classmates for study groups, share educational resources, and engage in
academic discussions. It can also serve as a platform for educational institutions to state
important updates and announcements. On the other hand, excessive use of Facebook can lead to
distraction, reduced focus, and procrastination, which can affect their academic performance by
spending too much time scrolling through the news feed, chatting with friends, or watching
entertaining videos.
