HOSPITAL

INTRODUCTION:

The ability and wisdom of human beings has been striving to construct a
society which could protect health and render overflowing welfare. The hospitals
have evolved as the centers of community health.

In India, it was the Christian Missionary Organization which established


Christian Medical College and Hospital in Vellore before the advent of
independence of India in 1947. Other leading hospitals were also established in
Chennai, Andhra Pradesh, Gujarat, Punjab etc. The pharmacist was the first
recognized professional person in pharmacy. Although concept of “hospital” first
came into existence prior to 1000 B.C.
The separation of pharmacy from medicine in India took place in charitable
institutions operated under governmental of ecclesiastic authority. In 1931, late
Prof. Mahadev Lal Shroff established B.Sc (Pharmacy) course in Banaras Hindu
University. Late Prof. Scroff received all encouragement from Mahamana Madan
Mohan Malvia, a great patriot born and established such courses in Madras
Medical College in 1941. At that time only 3 graduates in pharmacy (B.Pharm)
from the university of London and Manchester were available. In 1941, a post of
the hospital pharmacist was created in the K.E.M. Hospital in Mumbai by late
Dr. Jivraj Mehta. Later, attempts were made to create modern pharmaceutical
services in the government, municipal or privately run hospitals.
DEFINITION OF HOSPITAL:
Hospitals are an integral part of the social organization meant to take care of the
acutely ill and to promote health of the community.
